I use this with my Manfrotto tripod legs and my Nikon D7000. My heaviest lens is the Nikon 105mm macro. I use my tripod probably once a month for family portraits and sometimes macro work. The ball head: This works well. Holds steady and seems rock solid.
I purchased the Manfrotto MH057M0-Q6 Magnesium Ball Head with Q6 Quick Release Kit to use with my Manfrotto 057 Carbon Fiber Tripod. The ball head is light, sturdy and will support the heaviest equipment I have without worries when switching out gear in different scenarios.
This is a very sturdy ball head. High quality and good value for money.
This head has worked consistently great for me for the last 2 years of very heavy use. No issues what so ever.
I love stable this head is without feeling really heavy. I would not call it substantial but that's just because it doesn't feel like its a solid block of metal, and yet that makes it so much easier to travel with.
I recently used this on my Gitzo tripod, loading a Canon 5D Mark III and 16-35mm 2.8L lens for an indoor shoot of a city skyline. I put the camera body on the ball head, making sure it connected. I tightened the lever to lock it tightly in place. I moved the tripod and the camera fell off!!!
