The Toshiba Canvio Desk is a frills-free, solid performer for desktop users looking for a backup drive or to expand their storage space.
The Toshiba Canvio Desk offers fast USB 3.0 performance, a practical design, and is relatively affordable.
The Toshiba Canvio Desk caps at only 3TB (and not 4TB). Its power adapter is a bit bulky.
Note a trend: They're all called "Slim." Like we said in the beginning, since physics and the drive mechanisms inside dictate so much, these drives are by necessity similar. However, if you intend to rely heavily on the bundled software, rather than just using the drive as a drag-and-drop...
Aluminum-sided design, Activity light signals USB 2.0 or 3.0 connection, Nifty (if patchwork) software bundle, including password-protection utility
Use of password-protection utility requires foresight, No 2TB capacity, Slightly behind other 1TB portables in our tests
If you are the one looking for a trouble free and efficient drag-and-drop storage back up for managing your growing digital library, then the new Toshiba 500GB Canvio USB 3.0 would work like a boon for you.
OMG! What a hard drive! Really? It's just a hard drive. But Toshiba's have never failed me - yet - while other brands have. I'll stick with these 1 TB's for the foreseeable future.
I have been using it on a USB 1.0 plug, though I believe it may work on USB 2.0. So I can't really comment on speed except that I notice it goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. It doesn't take long to get it up again.
It works on Windows 7 and 8, the operating systems of my two computers. It's a decent size (way more than I need, but it was a good deal when I bought it). There's no need for an extra plug. So far, it hasn't broken.
For how I'm using it, the small cord size is fine, but it would be nice if the USB port on the drive was something like a micro-USB or mini-USB so that users won't have to get a special cord if they want it longer.
This is perfect for the person whose PC is running out of space, but who don't want to purchase a new computer. If I'd known how easy it was to solve the problem, I would have done it long, long before this.
Compact, Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast, Highly Compatible
Toshiba makes great drives, this is my third one so far and they have never let me down. Good speed and sturdy design in a very compact case. I've never thrown one against a wall or anything to check the durability, but it's been through its paces and continues to work fine.
First harddrive I've personally had fail on me in 21 years in the IT industry. Worked great for 5 months then just failed, not impressed. Got 2 of these, the other is running ok, but won't be trusting it for anything important.
The first backup unit would not install. I brought it back and was given another one. The second backup unit installed with a little work and then would not backup anything. I am bring that one back too. I do not think I will replace it with an other Toshiba.
These are easy to take with you and use to store whatever you need to store. They do not require any software or external power source, just connect it to your computer and you are ready to roll.
I tried to get this thing to do it's job out of the box. It didn't really want to so i just formatted it to get rid of the auto-crap and used the windows backup, works great. Quiet, cool, efficient. All said, it's worth the price.
Why did I choose this hard drive? I was prompted to buy a new external hard drive when my iphone memory became too full! 2000 photos in, and my iphone started to slow down and send me warnings about my storage space.
super fast transfers, usb powered
easy to disconnect- moving can interrupt transfers
Wish warranty was for more than one year. Easy set up.
