The Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a value option for professional shooters who want a stabilized f/2.8 telezoom.

  • +

Excellent center sharpness through most of its range. Fixed f/2.8 aperture. Includes tripod collar. Optically stabilized.

  • -

So-so images at 200mm f/2.8. Distortion at 70mm. Edge performance could be better.

Even though there's a slight drop in sharpness at 200mm, the Sigma delivers excellent overall image quality, making it exceptional value at the price.

  • +

Value for money, Overall performance, Dual-mode image stabilizer

  • -

Slight loss of sharpness at full zoom, f/2.8 maximum aperture makes it big and heavy

It’s expensive, but not as expensive as similar lenses from the first-party manufacturers. If you want speed, quality and versatility, the chunky Sigma 70-200mm lens is a belter.

  • +

Fast constant maximum aperture, build quality, AF/MF switching

  • -

A focus limiter would be nice, no macro ratio scale, no image stabilisation

Sigma's latest image-stabilized fast telezoom offers a fine option for budget-conscious buyers, with a unique combination of features for the price. It can't quite match its Canon and Nikon equivalents, but then again it's not as expensive either.

  • +

Very sharp across the frame when stopped down, Minimal color fringing/chromatic aberration of any description, Fast, silent, accurate autofocus with manual override, Very effective image stabilization, Decent build quality, Clever design tripod mount which is quick and easy to remove with the lens...

  • -

Somewhat soft and low in contrast at F2.8 towards the edges, especially on full frame cameras, Can give somewhat harsh rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds at longer focus distances, No focus limiter switch, No weathersealing, Susceptible to flare with direct light sources in or close to the frame,...

Sigma have a long history of producing decent lenses in this range. In this review, Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at their latest optically stabilised version.

  • +

Excellent centre sharpness at most focal lengths and apertures, Very low CA levels, Fast AF, Optical Stabiliser, Decent build quality

  • -

Lacklustre resolution performance at 70mm and f/2.8

It is a relatively new purchase for me but I am impressed with the overall quality and performance of this lens. I have not used the equivalent Nikon lens so can't compare the two. However, I was very clear about how much I was going to spend. If this is your budget, go for it.

  • +

Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction

  • -

    Heavy

This lens will please the most discriminating photo enthusiast and pros alike. This lens is just as sharp as the canon lens. The constant F2.8 is a big plus too. I can not say one bad thing about this lens it’s that good. Buy one you will love it, and love the $$ you saved.
