The Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a value option for professional shooters who want a stabilized f/2.8 telezoom.

  • +

Excellent center sharpness through most of its range. Fixed f/2.8 aperture. Includes tripod collar. Optically stabilized.

  • -

So-so images at 200mm f/2.8. Distortion at 70mm. Edge performance could be better.

A lens with a 70-200mm focal length range, a wide, fixed max f/2.8 aperture and optical stabilization is destined to become a critical part of most people's lens kit. With this lens model now offered by many manufacturers, "Which one is right for you?

Sigma's latest image-stabilized fast telezoom offers a fine option for budget-conscious buyers, with a unique combination of features for the price. It can't quite match its Canon and Nikon equivalents, but then again it's not as expensive either.

  • +

Very sharp across the frame when stopped down, Minimal color fringing/chromatic aberration of any description, Fast, silent, accurate autofocus with manual override, Very effective image stabilization, Decent build quality, Clever design tripod mount which is quick and easy to remove with the lens...

  • -

Somewhat soft and low in contrast at F2.8 towards the edges, especially on full frame cameras, Can give somewhat harsh rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds at longer focus distances, No focus limiter switch, No weathersealing, Susceptible to flare with direct light sources in or close to the frame,...

The new Sigma 70-200mm/2.8 APO DC HSM lens is a well built, good-quality tele zoom that is designed to compete against top-of-the-line zooms from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Sony with similar specifications.

Sigma have a long history of producing decent lenses in this range. In this review, Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at their latest optically stabilised version.

  • +

Excellent centre sharpness at most focal lengths and apertures, Very low CA levels, Fast AF, Optical Stabiliser, Decent build quality

  • -

Lacklustre resolution performance at 70mm and f/2.8

Sigma has figured out that to compete with the major manufacturers, it has to offer optical stabilization, and it makes excellent sense to implement it into this particular category of lens.

The very wide maximum aperture allows for low-light shooting, but we found significant corner softness at wider apertures.

Even though there's a slight drop in sharpness at 200mm, the Sigma delivers excellent overall image quality, making it exceptional value at the price.

In terms of overall performance there’s no beating the Canon and Nikon 70-200mm lenses. They do the best job of focusing on fast-moving subjects. However, this Sigma isn’t too far behind when it comes to tracking movement.

Sigma has been producing fast tele zoom lenses for hand-held photography since the late 1980s and, although the new 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG OS lens claims to be a second generation model, we estimate it's the sixth in a line that reaches back to the original AF 70-210mm f/2.8, which was designed...

Great lens, built well and the sharpness is excellent. If you can't take a good, sharp photo with this Sigma lens, it's a "you" problem not a "lens" problem.

This lens will please the most discriminating photo enthusiast and pros alike. This lens is just as sharp as the canon lens. The constant F2.8 is a big plus too. I can not say one bad thing about this lens it’s that good. Buy one you will love it, and love the $$ you saved.

  • +

Quality feel, fast Auto focus and HSM motor, Tripod collar, case and Sigma warrantee

This is my main glass for sports, since it was my first purchase for shooting HS Sports. I have used it with the Rebel and 40D. This lens is simply great for the price and is great for almost all sports. For the beginner, intermediate or casual shooter, you can not get a better lens for the price.

  • +

All you could want from a 70-200 2.8 - period. Sturdy and strong. Just solid. Price.

  • -

Focus can zoom in and way out when you are in autofocus. Just boom -out of no where. Compared to the Canon 2.8 equivalent (which I borrowed) It is a slight bit off. You will have to work hard to get sharper images.

I cover all type of sports and for the pass 7 years, I've used my trusty Nikon 70-200mm lens and after reading up on how Sigma has stepped up and reviews, I decided to go for it and since I already have a Sigma 120-300mm lens it too has been awesome.
