Unlike, I suppose, the majority of users, I went with these as a lightweight alternative to a rather bulky set of 15x70s for astro. use. They are compelling. Capella shone with no discernable coma at all, a pleasant yellow-white shining jewel in the ample field.
I use these for astronomy, and they are very clear. Theyre relatively easy to focus. Just make sure to turn the dials slowly. It also stays in focus well after you focus it. Since the magnification is so high, its good for looking at planets or craters on the moon.
I bought thereto use for general astronomical viewing in an area with lots of town light. They're great for this and have exceeded my hopes. They also provided enough magnification to see Comet Lovejoy recently. I strongly recommend using them on a tripod.
I got the Nikon 16 X 50's mainly for astronomy. I will probably also use them for observing eagles in the area. I use a monopole with them and they are easier to use that way than my pair of 15 X 70's. They are very clear, easily focused, and easily managed.
Focusing is extremely sensitive. I realize that these are 16X glasses and focusing has to be precise. As well, the optics are not as clear and as sharp as my Nikon Action Lookout IV 10X50 binoculars I have had for 25 years.
I love them!
I bought these binoculars as an economically priced pair with a long reach for bird watching. 16x is really the limit for handholding, even in strong light, because of the difficulty in holding them steady. I have used them in bird hides mainly, where I can support them by leaning on the shelf.
Superb optical quality, especially the eyepieces which are very wide and facilitate the wearer of spectacles without getting that remote tunnel vision effect. Excellent value for money. You cannot beat Nikon, but I knew that having previously bought a pair of 12 x 50 ties.
Used a couple of times, once to watch a coastal rowing competition and then to view the moon and Jupiter (small dot and 4 small dots for moons).in both ircumstances worked very well, Although I did use a monopod.
When these binoculars arrived I was quiet excited. Everything was good, the look, the feel and I suppose they are very good binoculars. The only disappointing thing, for me, was that the object I was looking at was no nearer than my 30yr old 10x50 Carl Ziess binoculars.
