The 5D MkIII comes in at £2999 – quite hike in price from the launch price of the MkII, which can now be picked up for under £1700. Canon believe that it’s a whole different class of camera to the model that it superseeds, and we’re inclined to agree with them.

  • +

Excellent set of features, build-quality is much better than MkII, AF system and overall performance

  • -

    Expensive compared to some rivals.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III looks a lot like its predecessor on the outside, but offers plenty of improvements under the hood. It's a solid option for advanced shooters with an investment in Canon glass, but doesn't match the rapid-fire shooting capabilities of the EOS-1D X or Nikon D4.

  • +

Compact for a full-frame SLR. 22-megapixel resolution. Large optical viewfinder. Bright, high-res rear LCD. Fast autofocus. 6fps continuous shooting. Excellent high ISO performance. 1080p video recording.

  • -

Expensive. Slow focus in Live View and Video modes. No built-in flash. Not compatible with EF-S lenses.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III makes a raft of improvements to the best-selling Mark II to become one of the most complete and well-balanced DSLRs around. While it may not sport a truly headline-grabbing specification, like the Nikon D800's 36 Megapixel resolution, Canon has upgraded just about every...

  • +

Great photo and video quality with low noise at high sensitivities., Powerful 61-point AF system with easy presets., Large viewfinder with 100% coverage and detailed 3:2 screen., 6fps continuous shooting., Good ergonomics, build quality and twin card slots.

  • -

No built-in flash or wireless controller., No built-in Wifi or GPS. Both are expensive accessories., No articulated screen, no interval timer., No movie crop mode, no clean HDMI, no continuous movie AF., 36 Megapixel Nikon D800 available for less.

The Canon 5D Mark III was announced on March 2, on the 25th anniversary of the EOS system and the first EOS SLR camera. Photography and the EOS system has come a long way since then as evidenced by Canon’s line of DSLRs and while Canon wasn’t the first manufacturer to incorporate video into a DSLR...

  • +

Excellent photo/video quality, Excellent build quality, Advanced 61 point AF system

  • -

Best image quality from Raw (vs. JPEG), Overly aggressive noise reduction, Monaural on-board microphone

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is not only a very capable photographic tool in almost all areas, it's also fun and exciting to shoot with. Slight JPEG softness is disappointing in a camera at this level but it's only visible at pixel-level and we would expect most of the camera's target group to shoot...

  • +

Good resolution and detail in raw files, Good color and tonality across the ISO range, Reliable metering even in difficult contrast situations, Very responsive and snappy operation, thanks to new Digic 5+ processor, 6 frames per second continuous shooting with good buffering, Excellent build-quality...

  • -

Destructive noise reduction results in mushy JPEGs, even at base ISO, Visible sharpening artifacts at default settings, Heavy-handed noise reduction leads to lack of low-contrast detail at higher ISOs, Distortion correction not available 'on the fly', Built-in microphone only monaural, Soft video...

The 22.3-megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark III captured some of the cleanest images I’ve seen from a DSLR when shooting in low light at high ISOs. That’s no small feat. Cameras such as the 5D Mark III’s predecessor — the 5D Mark II — and the 16.2MP Nikon D4 , are designed as low-light assassins, with...

  • +

In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) feature combines three shots into one image with better exposure. “Silent” shooting mode helps capture stealthy candid portraits. Rank photos in-camera with one to five stars, then carry those ratings over to Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and Apple Aperture.

  • -

Only slightly more resolution than four-year-old previous model. Starting price nearly ,000 higher than predecessor. Built-in mic only offers mono sound.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III SLR is finally a complete and very powerful. Difficult to find a weak point. After a short period of adaptation becomes an extension of the arm of the photographer.

  • +

Image quality, Completeness and customizability of commands, Silent shutter mode.

  • -

Lack of a flasher incorporated, Tendency to underexposure.

When Canon introduced the highly anticipated 5D Mark III to the market, the photography community and many Canon fans felt underwhelmed by its specifications, especially after the big shock wave left by the Nikon D800.

Although the Canon EOS 5D Mark III may not have the show-stopping features of some of its rivals, it quietly delivers a stellar performance as an entry-pro DSLR camera. Experts unanimously agree that the EOS 5D Mark III is the camera of choice for sports/action and low-light shooters, while its...

  • +

Strong 22.3-megapixel resolution, Extraordinary low-light capability, Outstanding autofocus, Very intuitive to use

As one of the true superstar digital SLRs retailing for a medium-high starting price, the Canon 5D Mark III deserves close scrutiny, and it's lived up to our expectations. Replete with new features, the Canon 5D Mark III's most important one is its full-frame sensor, whose resolution Canon kept to a...

I am a pro and I bought the 5d mark 3 knowing it is near the end of its cycle; by this time next year its successor should be out but I wanted a camera now and the 5d loses no utility just because it's not the latest.

This camera is nice to have, but if you're a portrait photographer that only shoots people and events get the 6D. I have it as a back up and the camera can perform better than the 5d MK3 any day on lowlight. I shot the 5d MK3 at 6400 iso and the pictures are way grainier than the 6D.

If you're a heavy user, serious about your photos and invest in good glass. go with this camera. You won't be disappointed. I also recommend using the Canon 28-300mm L series IS lens with this camera as a good all around lens.

Fantastic camera. I've only used it on two occasions so far, but I'm pleased with the way the camera feels and functions. I have used it to shoot two horse races in changing light conditions and I'm pleased with the way the camera reads the changing light and focuses on horses traveling at 35 mph.

This is a full frame camera and some of the lenses I purchased for my Canon 7D are not compatible, but I knew this when I bought it. I'll keep my 7D as a back up and for these lenses.
