I have owned the Sony 300mm f/2.8 G lens for a long time. I also had the Sony 2X TC but had mixed feelings about the results I was getting. The 2X caused loss of contrast and in low light my A900 would have difficulty finding auto-focus.
I am an amateur photographer that shoots high school sports for our local high school. I wanted a fix aperture lens but found that it limited my distance to do so. I purchased this in hopes of getting some of that distance back. There is no quality degradation when using this with your lens.
I bought this 1.4 teleconverter because I cannot afford the 12,000 dollar 500mm telephoto lens. I thought I'd try this on my 70/400 mm telephoto lens. Problem is I cant manually focus the long shots, which is why I bought this. So I have this expensive piece of gear for moon shots. For now.
I use this TC with a Minolta 400/4.5 HS APO coupled with my Sony A77ii & a99 bodies. I honesty don't see any degradation in image sharpness and AF function is retained when used with this lens.
If you got the 70-200mm Sony G lens then this is a natural addition and the lens is not complete without it. It works flawlessly including auto focus with the Sony Alpha 100(and I assume the A 700)
Works exactly as it should with the Minolta 200mm APO. No noticeable degradation in IQ unless you pixel peep and even then it's pretty negligible.
I use this TC on my Sony 300mm f/2.8 lens mounted on an A900 camera. I bought the 300mm lens at a good price from a photographer who needed to raise money quickly. I bought her Sony 2X teleconverter at the same time. I loved the 300m lens but was consistently disappointed when I used the 2X TC.
I was told before I bought this that it would not work on non-G series lenses, in 20 years of using Minolta hardware I have never encountered this so I was skeptical - but I can confirm it is true. None of my Minolta or Sony "non-G" lenses will work with this T/C.
It has fine resolution but will not fit on medium-length (or shorter) lenses. It only fits on my 500m lens. I had hoped to use it on others.
Much to my surprise, the Sony 1.4x teleconverter does not auto-focus with the Sony G series 70-400 mm zoom. True enough, it says that the Sony 1.4x teleconverter was designed specfically for use with the Sony 2.8 lenses; however, it does not say that it will not allow your Alpha a900 DSLR to...
