The A7 is not without its faults – even with the on-chip phase-detect AF, focusing performance for moving subjects is restrictive, burst shooting is also slow, there’s the odd handling quirk, while aesthetically its not going to win any prizes, but it also does a lot of things very well.

  • +

Excellent image quality; Level of customization; Size; Price; Handling

  • -

Limited lens range; Focusing slow for continuous shooting; Burst shooting could be better

The Sony Alpha 7 is a fast-shooting, full-frame mirrorless camera that is capable of capturing some impressive images, but we prefer its sibling, the 7R, overall.

  • +

Full-frame image sensor. 5fps burst shooting. Snappy autofocus. Impressive high ISO performance. Sharp, tilting rear LCD. Focus peaking. Excellent OLED EVF. Great control layout. Compact, dust and moisture-resistant body. Vertical shooting grip available.

  • -

Sensor design includes OLPF. No PC sync socket. No built-in flash. External battery charger not included. Native lens library is in its infancy.

It's fair to say the A7r has stolen a lot of the A7's glory, and rightly so, as it's a camera that doesn't just take aim at cheaper full-frame DSLRs, but goes for the jugular of the top-end D800e.

  • +

Great quality rivals DSLRs of similar resolution., Full-frame sensor means no crop with any lenses., Small body with good ergonomics and controls., Weatherproof body., Excellent large and detailed electronic viewfinder., Tilting 3in screen with live histogram & leveling gauge.

  • -

AF falls behind DSLR viewfinder or best mirrorless., No built-in stabilisation. Needs optically stabilized lenses., Limited selection of native lenses at launch., Screen not touch-sensitive and doesn't fully articulate., Fairly basic bracketing and no timelapse built-in.

The Alpha 7 has broken new ground in the full-frame market, in terms of both size and price. While it's not perfect, the a7's compact size, broad feature set and very good raw image quality arguably make up for issues like relatively poor battery life and slightly overprocessed JPEGs.

  • +

Small and well-priced full-frame body, Very good image quality when shooting Raw, Solid build quality, Compatible with a huge range of legacy 35mm camera lenses with no field-of-view crop, Large, high resolution electronic viewfinder, Tilting LCD offers good detail and outdoor visibility, Useful...

  • -

JPEG quality disappointing compared to peers – crude sharpening, over-aggressive processing and occasional posterization, Autofocus can be hesitant, especially in low light; AF improves when assist lamp is turned off, Auto ISO tends to keep shutter speed at 1/60 sec, often resulting in blurry...

Sony rocked the photographic world when it launched the first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the a7 and a7R. These cameras catapulted the mirrorless market into the forefront of technology for many MILC advocates.

  • +

excellent image quality, advanced feature set with extensive custom options, high quality electronic viewfinder, Wi-Fi

  • -

slightly sub-par kit lens vs. cameras' capabilities, movie record button awkwardly placed, autofocus somewhat sluggish in low light, relatively short battery life, limited availability of native full-frame lenses at launch

The Sony Alpha A7S can do some remarkable things. It takes very good stills with its 12.2MP full-frame sensor. Wedding and event photographers should jump on it thanks to its quick response, along with outstanding image and movie quality.

Consumers are often asked to either pay a premium price or sacrifice features for compact cameras. Can the $2,000 full frame mirrorless camera from Sony change that?

Late last year, Sony set the mirrorless world alight with the announcement of not one, but two brand-new, fully-featured compact system cameras with full-frame image sensors. Realistically, the Sony A7 and A7R were -- and still are -- unrivaled.

  • +

Smallest full-frame, fully-featured interchangeable-lens camera by a country mile, Noticeably more affordable than A7R, Can fit in a coat pocket with lens, Superb JPEG image quality at low to moderate ISOs, Excellent sharpness with few sharpening artifacts, Excellent dynamic range, Very good high...

  • -

Very limited selection of native full-frame lenses (but many planned in the next two years), Weak optical low-pass filter can mean aliasing artifacts, High ISO JPEGs look over-processed, Slow buffer clearing (but deep buffer), AF not as good in low-light as most prosumer DSLRs (A7R performed better...

Sony Alpha ILCE-7 (A7) is a great alternative to similarly priced entry-level full-frame dSLRs, as long as you don't need speedy continuous shooting.

  • +

Sony's Alpha ILCE-7 , aka the A7, delivers excellent photo and video quality in a well-designed camera that's enjoyable to shoot with.

  • -

The long startup time and short battery life disappoint.

The digital photography world was set on fire when Sony models declared its Leader 7 and 7R full-frame mirror less electronic cameras. The Sony a7 is a great camera. Whether or not it's worth the upgrade from the crop sensor Sony a6000 really depends on the what you plan on photographing. The two cameras are similar in size, and features, but the a7 has the look and feel of a more 'professional' camera.

I have been wow'd by photos from people using the A7 series (A7, A7s, and A7r). I looked at all three and really the standout in the crowd was the A7. I owned an older Sony Alpha camera and had several lens for it, so if I was going to move or change cameras, I wanted to use those lenses.

  • +

    resolution and colors are superb.

  • -

    No built-in flash.

I've been a Canon user for years now. I assembled my gear around it. The Sony a7 is really such a beautiful camera that it makes me reconsider. Small, light, and, most of all, it enables you to use legacy lenses with such relative ease. I'm very happy with it that my Canon seemed retired of sorts.

Battery life is really an issue and I bought 2 spare batteries and a separate charger for it. I just wish that sony would produce more and better priced FE lenses.

At first, I bought this camera for using some old lenses and some Leica M-Mount lenses. I appreciated immediately the possibility to customize almost every single button and gear, but what I really fall in love with was the viewfinder.

I bought this camera along with the Zeiss 24-70 4.0 lens. Really good match. I have since then purchased the Zeiss 55 1.8 lens and the 90mm Macro. The 24-70 is still my favorite. So here is the "but".
