Sony's fifth full-frame mirrorless camera is its most impressive to date, an unashamedly high-end model aimed directly at buyers of Nikon's D810 and Canon's EOS 5DS(r). It features a 42 Megapixel back-illuminated full-frame sensor, 4k video, built-in stabilisation, an electronic viewfinder with a...

Very high resolution images and a body designed to capture them., 4k video, 1080 at 60p and 720 at 120p., Embedded AF system with broad coverage and good CAF., Built-in stabilisation works with any lens., Large and detailed viewfinder. Tilting screen.

  • -

Built-in IS only provided one or two stops in my tests., Small dials and buttons. Often confusing menu system., Screen not fully-articulated or touch-sensitive., Smart Remote app needs updating straightaway for manual control., Silent shutter mode reduces RAW dynamic range.

It needs a little more refinement, but overall the Sony A7R II is a great camera for folks who need a high-resolution full-frame model in a more compact design than a dSLR.

  • +

For the most part, the Sony A7R II delivers terrific photo and video quality in a compact, well-designed body.

  • -

Terrible battery life and a mushy shutter mechanism may negatively impact your shooting experience. Also, there's general highlight clipping in still photos and artifacts in some high-ISO-sensitivity shots that we hope Sony can improve via a firmware update.

The Sony Alpha 7R II is a full-frame mirrorless camera that delivers absolutely incredible image and video quality, but it will cost you.

  • +

Excellent 42-megapixel image sensor. Superb high ISO imaging. In-body image stabilization. 5fps continuous shooting. Hybrid autofocus system. Hinged rear display. Excellent EVF. Dust- and moisture-resistant design. 4K video capture.

  • -

Expensive. Omits PC sync socket. Overly sensitive eye sensor. No built-in flash.

The a7R II brings 42MP stills and 4K video to a small, lightweight body. Electronic shutter and in-body image stabilization make for high quality images and video you'll work harder to get, if you get it at all, from comparable DSLRs.

Class-leading low light Raw performance, thanks to the first-ever BSI full-frame CMOS, Impressive dynamic range in Raw, even at high ISO, Dramatically improved JPEGs, with sophisticated sharpening and well-controlled noise reduction, DRO and S-Log2 offer extensive dynamic range in JPEG, IBIS and...

Sony’s A-series cameras have gotten a lot of coverage in the photo press in the last few years with the recently introduced Sony A7R II receiving the kind of the pre-release hype not seen since the launch of the Canon 5D Mark II back in 2008.

On a recent flight to Europe, I bonded permanently with my Sony A7RII , the increasingly legendary new full-frame mirrorless camera. It happened over New York City, when opportunity scrolled slowly into view shortly after departing from Newark.

Digital devices often look good on paper but don’t always follow through to meet the promises of their specifications. Not so with the Sony a7R II , which is chock full of features, technology and performance enhancements that held real promise when first announced.

  • +

Excellent image quality; extensive feature set; 5-axis image stabilization; fast and accurate AF; good noise performance at high ISOs.

  • -

Relatively slow buffer clearing; slow start-up; rolling shutter in 4K crop mode; pricey.

This camera is perfect for my that have a lot of Leica Lens. The Leica M with Leica lens is 10, the best in the world, but I cant use telezoom lens, so with this camera I can use my Leica lens and also sony (70-400). So I have the best of this 2 worlds.

Owned a7, a7r, rx1, rx1r, a850, a6000...this is by far the best of them all...fantastic IQ even at high iso, i can shoot even at 10,000 without worrying about the image. The camera is the best of both worlds. It can shoot high resolution pictures and 4k video in one tiny package. There are some drawbacks like poor selection of native lenses, the jello effect with videos and some autofocus issues, but the positives outweigh the negatives of this camera.

I am very pleased with my A7RII. I use it with the new 24-70 G mostly and it is a little heavy and I wish it had a mount on the lens. The battery life is less than desirable but carrying a spare does the trick and charging the small battery doesn't take long.

I was and still am a happy Nikon D810 user, but also a middle aged female with an illness that effects my muscles and strength. I wanted a camera system that matches the quality of what I am used too, but that is easier to carry around and use.

I love the size of the camera. It great for video, but kinda slow for photos for me. The video quality is great, smooth and color is easy to edit. I really dont like shooting photos with it. Its too slow compared to my Nikon D810. Overall, its a great camera for the size and price.

The Sony A7Rii like the A7Sii is capable of truly remarkable photos. One of the big selling points of this camera is its ability to use a wide variety of lenses with the correct adaptor.
