The a7R II brings 42MP stills and 4K video to a small, lightweight body. Electronic shutter and in-body image stabilization make for high quality images and video you'll work harder to get, if you get it at all, from comparable DSLRs.

Class-leading low light Raw performance, thanks to the first-ever BSI full-frame CMOS, Impressive dynamic range in Raw, even at high ISO, Dramatically improved JPEGs, with sophisticated sharpening and well-controlled noise reduction, DRO and S-Log2 offer extensive dynamic range in JPEG, IBIS and...

No direct AF point control, Lock-on AF still remains unpredictable and often unreliable, Camera focuses stopped down in AF-C, often crippling AF at small apertures or in low light, Eye-AF and Lock-on AF not available with 3rd party lenses, nor in video, Camera drops to 12-bit mode in continuous...

Movies can be shot in XAVC S format with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression, or AVCHD with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 or MP4: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression. In NTSC the maximum quality option is XAVC S format at 4K and 30p/100Mbps while in PAL it's XAVC S 4K at 25p/100Mbps.

Amazingly, it's also the fifth full-frame mirrorless camera from Sony in less than two years. The company is developing and refining at a speed that must perplex and terrify slower rivals in equal measures - and you really can see and feel the difference between each generation, even from the recent...

  • +

Very high resolution images and a body designed to capture them., 4k video, 1080 at 60p and 720 at 120p., Embedded AF system with broad coverage and good CAF., Built-in stabilisation works with any lens., Large and detailed viewfinder. Tilting screen.

Built-in IS only provided one or two stops in my tests., Small dials and buttons. Often confusing menu system., Screen not fully-articulated or touch-sensitive., Smart Remote app needs updating straightaway for manual control., Silent shutter mode reduces RAW dynamic range.

It needs a little more refinement, but overall the Sony A7R II is a great camera for folks who need a high-resolution full-frame model in a more compact design than a dSLR.

  • +

For the most part, the Sony A7R II delivers terrific photo and video quality in a compact, well-designed body.

  • -

Terrible battery life and a mushy shutter mechanism may negatively impact your shooting experience. Also, there's general highlight clipping in still photos and artifacts in some high-ISO-sensitivity shots that we hope Sony can improve via a firmware update.

I normally don't write reviews, but I've seen so many negative reviews on this camera that I wanted to try to write a review that puts everything in perspective. First of all, I don't think the RII is a perfect camera, but I have found that the more I use it and learn about it, the more I have grown...

I am an architectural photographer who has been using the a7R for the last year + using my Canon lenses with an adaptor and have been very pleased with the results. I was on the fence about the new a7RII when I heard about it because the a7R really has done a great job for me.

What a great purchase. I normally shoot sports with Canon equipment but I'm branching off to do more landscapes so I'm loving this Sony. I purchased a 28mm 2.0 lens and a Metabones adapter so I can run all of my Canon lenses, but I'll surely be adding more Sony glass in the future.

  • +

Overall size, weight, file IQ, expanding lens options, large megapixel size, wireless options, time lapse app, flip screen, video quality, lens adapter options, customizable buttons, useful at high ISO

  • -

Price, Location of on/off switch, Sony menu layout, eats batteries, sensor is dust magnet, focusing on action with Canon/Metabones combo can be a little tricky (Hint, use 'center' focus mode)

This camera is perfect for my that have a lot of Leica Lens. The Leica M with Leica lens is 10, the best in the world, but I cant use telezoom lens, so with this camera I can use my Leica lens and also sony (70-400). So I have the best of this 2 worlds.

    Perfect with my leica lens

This camera is simply A-Mazing! I am not a professional but have been studying up on everything about this camera and plan to take some photography classes to move into a professional position. Love, Love, Love it!! Make sure you get a 35mm or 55mm prime lense with it!
