The sensor itself is not just about having decent continuous autofocus: with a large APSC area and 24 Megapixels, it's capable of delivering big images with fine detail and low noise. The only caveat here is the 16-50mm kit zoom which sacrifices quality for size.

  • +

Potentially great quality from 24 Mpixel sensor., Great continuous AF for photos and movies., 6fps continuous shooting with large bursts., Tilting touch-screen which can face subjects., Powerful but easy to use Wifi with NFC.

  • -

To exploit 24 Mpixels, you'll need a better lens., No viewfinder nor any means to connect one., Need to boost screen brightness for outdoor use., Basic exposure control and no GPS tagging via Wifi., No miniature effect for movies.

Sony Alpha 5100 Review - The Sony Alpha 5100 is one of the most feature-packed entry-level CSCs on the market, complete with a 179-point hybrid autofocus system and advanced video shooting capabilities

  • +

Impressive video capture performance; Tough body; Good image quality and AF speeds

  • -

Touchscreen performance not as comprehensive as competitors; No microphone socket

The Sony Alpha 5100 is quick to focus and features a tilting touch screen, but it can't shoot as fast as our favorite Sony mirrorless camera.

  • +

Fast autofocus. 5.9fps burst shooting with tracking focus. Strong high ISO performance. Tilting touch-screen display. In-body flash. Slim design. Wi-Fi with NFC. Downloadable camera apps. 1080p60 video.

  • -

No EVF or EVF add-on capability. Display only tilts up and forward. Lacks microphone input. Some apps must be purchased. Requires in-camera battery charging.

13 February 2015

The Sony A5100 is a powerful imaging tool in a very small body at a current street price of less than $500 (body only), which makes it an intriguing proposition not only for users stepping up from smartphone limitations, but also for Sony Alpha shooters looking for a capable back-up to a higher-end...

  • +

Amazing amount of firepower for this size and price point, Largest sensor found in an inexpensive compact camera (APS-C), Image quality is virtually identical to the popular Sony A6000, Dual video recording feature allows for two file formats recording simultaneously, Better external texture and...

  • -

No EVF, Limited external controls compared to some mid-range models, No mode dial - have to go into the menus to change the mode, High ISO noise handling with JPEGs is not as good as some competing mid-level cameras, Sluggish power-on, Warm Auto white balance in incandescent light, Weak flash with...

18 August 2014

The predecessors to the a5100 had a lot going for them: they were very compact, feature-packed, and produced good quality photos and videos. The a5100 is a much more compelling camera, taking the 'guts' from the more expensive a6000 and putting them into a body that'll easily slip into a jacket...

22 October 2014

Sony's A5100 may be the mirrorless middle child, but it's the best value.

This bundle is such a steal, when I got it, it was like an never ending box of goodies. The camera is on point. Best purchase by far. Highly recommend

27 November 2015

I love the camera, it's superb! But like others I realized mine also did not come in with the new stickers on it. That didn't discouraged me, because this is my very first mirrorless camera, I have never owned any previous dslr's either.

Camera is perfect and instructions are easy to follow.

  • +

Easy to Use, Good Battery Life, Great Resolution, Large Clear LCD

After having tremendous fun with the Nikon Df, I am coming back to my Sony A5100, since the full-frame Df went to the daugther just like the A7 did. She has a hell lot of assignments, and full-frame is mandatory for pros: now she has two FF cameras with enough lenses.
