An amazing lens that is priced above the norm but delivers results that are similarly elevated. As it is available in a range of lens mounts, the greatest number of photographers have access to its immense power.

While being the largest, heaviest and the priciest of the 50mm lenses I have tested so far, The Sigma f/1.4 EX DG HSM simply fails to deliver. Its high levels of purple fringing and relatively low sharpness in the center frame are disappointing, while the corners are clearly the worst in the group.

When Sigma first announced the 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM in March, our story headline (courtesy of our news editor and punmeister-in-chief) was 'A new standard?', and this has turned out to be remarkably prescient.

  • +

Class-leading image quality, Relatively low vignetting even at wide apertures on full frame, Reasonably fast and positive autofocus, with full-time manual override, Very good build quality

  • -

Large and heavy for a 50mm F1.4, Expensive

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look Sigma's first f/1.4 aperture standard lens, which sports a silent HSM focusing motor.

  • +

Excellent sharpness in the centre at most apertures, Low vignetting, 77mm filter size is the same as most professional level zooms

  • -

Maybe a little softer than I'd hoped at f/1.4, Heavier than any other 50mm f1.4 lens, Bigger than any other 50mm f/1.4 lens

Similar in size, features, and price (though not format) to Sigma's 30mm f/1.4 high-speed "normal" prime for DSLRs with APS-C sensors, this 50mm full-framer ($500, street) also belongs to Sigma's EX family of pro-quality glass.

I'm a wedding photographer, so fast primes are a must for me, especially during indoor ceremonies/receptions, and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens for Sony did not disappoint! Physically, the lens has a clean, simple, and beautiful build.

Consistent Output, Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction

This is the first prime 50mm that I purchase for my personal and professional gear. I just used this on a photo shoot for the first time professionally since I got it. I loved it! A great portrait lens for tight spaces. I shot in a small sound studio no bigger than a standard living room.

  • +

Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction

  • -

    Slow Focus

First Impressions: When I received the product, I was very impressed with the weight, the build quality, the smooth manual focus with just the right amount of resistance to make it easy to be precise.

One of the best 50mm. Beats even the 50mm from Sony, Canon and Nikon. I use it on the Sony A700
