Sigma's 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary lens covers an incredible zoom range, but makes compromises to do so.

  • +

16.7x zoom range. 1:3 macro reproduction. Image stabilization. Available for multiple APS-C systems. Compact.

  • -

Inconsistent sharpness. Noticeable image distortion. Dim corners.

Sigma are continuing to gradually update their lenses to fit into their 'Art', 'Sport' and 'Contemporary' lens lines. This new lens sports a 16.7x zoom range, silent focusing and optical stabilisation.

If you launch a lens with parameters slightly worse than those of its direct rival and you still want to succeed there are two strategies available: make sure that your lens has either better properties or a lower price.

  • +

useful focal range,, good image quality in the frame centre,, chromatic aberration corrected noticeably better than in the case of direct rivals,, proper correction of spherical aberration,, distortion correction better than that of the rivals,, moderate coma at longer focal lengths,, not especially...

  • -

weak image quality on the edge of the frame (apart from the 50 mm focal length),, noticeable vignetting at both ends of focal range.

This lens is certainly capable of delivering images with decent sharpness. It is reasonably compact, well built and the price is very reasonable too. Those looking for a lens covering a wide range of focal lengths, whilst allowing them to travel light should certainly give this lens serious...

  • +

Good optical performance for a super zoom lens, Well built, Lightweight, Compact, Optical stabiliser, Compatible with Sigma USB dock, Good value

  • -

Loose manual focusing action with no full-time manual override

If you're deciding on this Sigma lens vs. the equivalent 18-300 Nikon lens, you should consider some of these important differences. I'm writing this from the standpoint of someone who has used both the Sigma and Nikon lenses which may be helpful if you're trying to decide which is a better solution...

I love this lens. I bought it specifically to capture the total solar eclipse and it produced some amazing pics. Since then, it's become my "go-to" lens for a variety of occasions. The heft (weight) is impressive and it puts the kit lenses that came with my d3300 to shame.

This low-cost all-in-one lens is well-made and allows me to get great photos at a wide range of magnifications. While not as sharp as prime lenses, this lens is, in my opinion, acceptably sharp and easily corrected in DxO Optics Pro or similar programs to get great output.

Build quality is surprise, it's built in Japan. Lens very smooth with a comfortable grip. Images are crisp and clean and colours are reproduced true to life with deep saturation throughout the focal range.

The zoom lens makes it easier for portraits so I don't have to run around the studio so much. It allows for close ups as well as full image without changing lenses.

I got this lens only a few hours ago, and immediately put it to the test. My first impressions were very good. The lens seemed sharp throughout its range. I compared shots with it and with two highly-regarded zooms I already own: the Canon EFS 15-85 and the Canon EF 70-300L.

Did not fit my camera (Sony alpha a6000) had to buy an additional adapter, which has made this lens manual. However, still works pretty well as a manual lens, but may look into a different adapter to utilize the auto functions.

Fantastic lens! I get a great range without having to carry around multiple lenses. Perfect for travel.
