Sigma has redesigned its popular 105mm macro lens for mirrorless cameras. Angela Nicholson takes a close look
Aperture ring can be de-clicked, Extremely sharp, Chromatic aberration is well controlled, Broad focus ring, Build quality
Twice the price of the Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro EX DG OS HSM, No optical stabilisation built-in, Only available in L-mount and E-mount at time of writing
The only disappointment about the Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro Art is that it’s not available in more mounts. Nikon Z-series and Canon R-series photographers can’t get the benefit of its excellent credentials.
Excellent sharpness across the frame, Attractive bokeh, Weather sealing
Only available in the L and Sony E mounts, Unstabilised
The Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro Art offers everything you want in a macro lens, including near-perfect optics, 1:1 reproduction, and a professional fit and finish.
High-resolution optics, 1:1 macro reproduction, Quick autofocus, Dust, splash, and fluorine protection, Focus limiter and aperture lock, Available for E and L-mount cameras
Reliant on in-camera stabilization, Focus breathing limits video use
The test results of the Sigma A 105 mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro are so explicit that we don't have to write a long summary. When a lens with a very long list of pros is able to break resolution records and it has just one, not especially important flaw, there is nothing to do but to recommend that...
solid and stylish casing,, sensational image quality in the frame centre,, excellent image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, good image quality on the edge of full frame,, slight spherical aberration,, lack of any problems connected to longitudinal chromatic aberration,, negligible lateral...
too slow autofocus.
If you are looking for an excuse to buy this lens, I’ll give you three. It’s sharp, it delivers awesome performance as a macro lens, and it’s an excellent dedicated portrait lens. The build quality is very good and tactile feedback is positive and convincing.
The Sigma 105mm f2.8 DG DN Macro Art is the first macro lens for Sigma’s DN-series of lenses designed specifically for mirrorless cameras with Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount. The excellent performance makes it a perfect match for high resolution full-frame mirrorless cameras with E-mount or L-mount.
Bit of a beast!! Certainly not a light lens but great quality - glad I purchased.
Super quality optics.Pictures are superb sharp.Im very happy£700 yes not cheep but ....low light focusing +/- yes - there is a little low performance but lens is super sharp that maybe my camera A7RII not up to date on focusing I dont know.... but this lens makes me love photography again.
