If you want a discreet, easily pocketable or lightweight lens then this is the one to have. With the metal lens hood and cap screwed into place, the build is up to knocking around in a handbag or glove compartment without worries.

  • +

Size and weight are minimal, Hood/cap arrangement afford good protection, Cute little carry pouch.

  • -

Screw-in lens cap is fiddly to remove, Optically good enough but not stunning.

Overall, this lens performs excellently, addressing some of the weaknesses of the other 40mm pancake lenses in their line up at the same time. Whether this is worth the extra hundred pounds or more to you, will depend how much you value things like, resistance to flare, whether a hood is included,...

  • +

Excellent sharpness from maximum aperture, Thin and lightweight, Good build quality and handling, Fast focusing

  • -

May be a touch too expensive when compared to existing lenses in the range

With this lens being very similarly specified to the newer XS lens, it can make the price premium difficult to justify, especially as the newer lens is sharper towards the edges of the frame at maximum aperture.

Excellent sharpness from maximum aperture, Thin and lightweight, Good build quality and handling, Fast focusing

  • -

Not as sharp as the newer XS lens towards the edges of the frame at maximum aperture

The Pentax SMC DA 40mm f/2.8 exhibits a quite harmonious optical performance combined with excellent build quality. It is capable to produce very sharp images across the frame straight from the max. aperture. Distortions are marginal and CAs are a non-issue.

Handling and features This compact 40mm pancake lens is part of the Pentax Limited range, which signifies that it is one of their top-end optics. It has a bright maximum aperture of f/2.8, costs around £380 and only protrudes from the lens mount by 15mm.

As part of the Pentax Limited range, this compact 40mm pancake lens is one of their flagship optics. It has a bright maximum aperture of f/2.8, costs around £440 and is only 15mm thick without a hood attached.

Iq and build quality are nice, and for most situations I think it is fast enough, especially because it is pretty great right from f2.8. I like that it is compact and easy to carry around, although some might consider it a little too small (lens cap, hood, focus ring are all quite narrow).

  • +

    good quality and compact

  • -

    no dof scale

I see why everyone talks about this lens. Amazing image quality and it weighs less than a pound. Great every day walk around lens. Works well on the K-1 with only occasional minor vignette corrections.

Part of the challenge of DSLR photography is finding the motivation to take equipment out as sometimes the stuff can be burdensome compared to say a digicam in your pocket. I take this lens out by itself attached to the K-7 all of the time as it’s just that convenient.

  • +

    - A great all-rounder type lens that’s almost at the standard focal length for APS-C sized image sensors (35mm would be equivalent)., - A lens that’s frankly special and unique due to how physically convenient it is yet still achieves no compromises image quality.

  • -

    - The manual focus ring is almost too small., - I somehow got a small scuff on my manual focus ring, showing a tiny bit of silver aluminum. Not sure how it happened, but don’t expect the lens to stay completely black unless you baby it (I don’t baby my equipment by any means).

This is my go to lens if I am not sure what I will encounter. Excellent descriptions have been posted by others, excellent photos too. If you had to travel with only one lens it's that one. Running it on a Pentax K50.

There is no way to describe how amazing Pentax Limited lenses are until you experience them. My 40mm Limited is so crisp, focuses so quickly and produces such vivid, colorful images, its hard to snap a zoom on my camera anymore.

If you are reading this review, you're probably wondering about whether or not you should buy this lens. The answer is yes, yes you should. It is absolutely superb and only costs, what, $280 now? Why are you still reading this review? Go! Make your purchase!

    Tiny, incredibly sharp, relatively inexpensive

  • -

Weird bokeh for point sources of light, could be faster

This lens I use on digital, crop. Of all the Pentax lenses I use I find this lens not sharp on the digital camera. I like the range, the price was more than fair, but I just can't be pleased with it.

It's tiny, decently sharp at f4 and sharp at f5.6 and above. I was very happy when I bought this lens and I used it a lot because of its tiny size and weight when traveling by bike for more than a week (that's the only lens I carried and I did everything with this single small lens), using it a...

This is my second Pentax Limited Edition lens. The first (HD DA 21) was purchased in May of this year and never ceases to amaze me with magic hour landscape and urban street shots. The 40mm is very special too. Discrete and compact, it works well for walk-around and travel photography.

  • +

Image quality, flare resistance, true-to-life colour rendering, build quality, compact size, lens hood, standard 49mm filter size

I have used this lens regularly for several months and I am well satisfied with it. For me, it has become a 'standard' or everyday/where lens. I have used it to cover weddings, for travel and family events.
