There’s no denying the Pentax DA 40mm and 70mm Limited lenses are pretty special. Their incredibly compact design is pretty much unique to Pentax and unlike anything offered by other DSLR manufacturers. The DA 40mm f2.8 Limited is particularly impressive in this regard, measuring just 15mm thick.
Extremely thin lens – only 15mm thick, Quality construction, Aluminium lens hood and cap supplied, Unique standard lens option, Very thin lens – only 26mm thick, Fast f2.4 aperture, Quality construction, Aluminium lens hood and cap supplied
Hardly anything to hold onto, Slow to unscrew lens cap, Some softness on our sample, Audible auto-focusing with K10D, Coloured fringing seen across frame, Not much to grip onto, Audible auto-focusing with K10D, Lens cap only fits over lens hood
If you want a discreet, easily pocketable or lightweight lens then this is the one to have. With the metal lens hood and cap screwed into place, the build is up to knocking around in a handbag or glove compartment without worries.
Size and weight are minimal, Hood/cap arrangement afford good protection, Cute little carry pouch.
Screw-in lens cap is fiddly to remove, Optically good enough but not stunning.

Tiny, incredibly sharp, relatively inexpensive
Weird bokeh for point sources of light, could be faster
Paired it with my new K-5IIs, image quality is very close to a full frame format.
This lens fills the gap between the DA HD 21mm and the DA HD 70mm Lens for me. I used the same subject for all three lens and took multiple shots with each lens. THE IQ either equaled or surpassed the results of the other two lenses. Color rendition is great for all three.
