This 2x zoom lens provides an angle of view equivalent to a 30.5-61.5mm lens on a 35mm format camera, when mounted on a Pentax Digital SLR, which is neither very wide, nor very telephoto.
I have no problems whatsoever with understanding the launch of such a lens as the Sigma A 18–35 mm f/1.8. I wouldn’t have such problems also in the case of a 20-40 mm fixed focus f/2.0 model.
solid, stylish and sealed casing,, good image quality in the frame centre,, very good correction of the longitudinal chromatic aberration,, no reservations concerning the spherical aberration correction,, slight astigmatism,, very good work against bright light,, moderate vignetting,, accurate and...
weak image quality on the edge of the frame near the maximum relative aperture,, lateral chromatic aberration at the shortest focal length could have been lower,, too slow autofocus,, a tad too pronounced coma,, average price/quality and price/parameters ratio.
As far as variable aperture standard zoom lenses go, this is one of the better ones as far as optical performance is concerned. Unfortunately, due to the price, it is easy to expect more from a lens like this.
Very good sharpness in the centre at maximum aperture, Excellent sharpness when stopped down, Very good build, Weather resistant construction, Low CA, Retro styling
Expensive for a variable aperture standard zoom, Odd zoom range is not really very wide, nor very telephoto, Neither focus or zoom are performed internally
Great single walking around lens. Finally, "Limited" build quality coupled with weather sealing. I favor all the small limited primes but always wished they were weather sealed like the "*" star lenses. The 20-40 covers all the standard focal lengths.
The limited series are not only compact, relatively light and render beautiful images.
Dream kit for hiking with the KP. Noticeably lighter, and as a person with some surgery-related limitations, I really appreciate the flexibility of this versus several primes and the light weight, especially for a WR lens. I think this with the KP will be an ideal hiking kit.
Bought it because of WR. Wasn't expecting so much CA even at lower ISOs.
Excellent sharp lens.
I use this Pentax 20-40 on my K5 due to it`s water seals. I read many reviews and was hesitant to purchase since there are quiet a few so,so reviews out there. Any way I`m glad I purchased ,the build quality is superb and the image quality is very good..no complaint :)
The Pentax DA 20-40mm Limited zoom delivers good image quality in a finely crafted metal body. AF is accurate, and relatively quick and silent. While large by Limited series standards (except for the FA 31mm Ltd), it still offers a fairly small and weather resistant package mated to the K-3.
Great clarity and tone. I expect to us it as my primary lens on an upcoming vacation.
At first I avoided buying this lens as I didn't think I would use the focal range as much to justify the price.I was so wrong. This is now my main lens and it has changed the way I approach scenes in my photography. I do mostly landscapes and shoot at f/8 - f/16 the majority of the time.
It replaced my 18-135mm WR as my carry around lens. It's light, sharp and beautifully designed. Works great on my wildflower photography...coupled with my Pentax K-3 it's a winner. I love the hood that comes with it...got mine in silver..
