With its compact size, robust feature set, abundant controls and overall responsiveness, the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 is a great camera for all kinds of photographers. The trick tilting viewfinder is a neat touch (though we wish it were larger), and limited battery life remains a sticking point.

  • +

Street photographers, travel photographers who don't mind carrying an extra battery with them, enthusiasts that enjoy abundant controls and those who want great JPEGs right out of the camera.

  • -

Hardcore landscape and sports shooters that may need greater dynamic range, resolution and burst speeds.

Panasonic's Lumix GX9 is a feature-packed mid-range mirrorless camera, featuring a 20 Megapixel Four Thirds sensor that's stabilized within the body, an electronic viewfinder and touchscreen, both of which can tilt vertically, 9fps bursts with continuous autofocus, 4k video with Panasonic's array of...

I liked the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 a great deal. It has an excellent set of features, and out of the box outperforms a compact camera by a long way, while not being all that much larger. And it has the potential to deliver stunning shots in all sorts of conditions if equipped with the right lens.

  • +

Compact quality, the ability to use fancier lenses, a wealth of advanced features including focus stacking and pre-burst

  • -

    Slow photo transfer speeds

In many ways the Lumix GX9 takes two steps forward over the GX8, but one step (maybe half a step) back. While there's perhaps a little too much reliance on the touchscreen interface for some, especially when selecting your desired AF area, the GX9 is a nice camera and a very solid performer – it...

Compact design, 4K video and 4K Photo modes, Hybrid stabilization system, Responsive touchscreen, Built-in flash, Fast focusing speeds in Single AF

  • -

AF selection fiddly, Awkward rear control dial, 16:9 aspect ratio viewfinder, Body isn't weather-sealed

  • -

Default control setup is awkward for viewfinder shooting, 16:9 viewfinder is a poor match to sensor, Control dials are under-utilised

The devil in the details - and the details are where the GX9 shines.

  • +

Good image quality, Lots of control

  • -

Not weatherproof, A lot of indirect costs (lenses, etc)

While not quite shirt-pocketable, the GX9 and bundled lens are a nice combo for everyday shooting and video recording, and a good choice for a traveller’s camera.

If you want a small camera that can shoot good-quality stills and 4K video alike, then the GX9 is well worth a look. But for stills photographers, there are other cameras at a similar price point that deserve consideration, such as the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Fujifilm X-E3 .

We’ll start by saying that we have really, really enjoyed testing the Panasonic Lumix GX9.The camera packs a seriously impressive number of controls into a compact and stylish body. We think the camera handles better with an optional grip.

Great camera for traveling. The bluetooth and wifi capabilities are a bit baffling. The phone app kinda sucks. Get the panny 25mm lens ... the 167 dollar one ... not the leica. They are very similar but the panny is 400 bucks less. Make sure you upgrade the firmware to 1.1 on the lens and camera.

Background Bought the GX9 as an upgrade from my GX85, serving as my secondary (smaller) m43 body alongside the G9. I use my smaller body whenever I travel for business and want a small camera with me, or go out in the evening, and don't want to lug the heavier bodied G9, although the GX9 can easily...

I bought this combo to complement my Panasonic G9 and other lenses, notably the !00-400mm, 20mm, 25mm and 14-140mm. Although I have yet to put the GX9 fully through its paces I am so far very pleased with the results and can certainly see there is much more potential, particularly for when I travel...

I use this body and a Panaleica 12-60 F2.8/4 as my most compact walkaround kit that will produce images of sufficient quality for pro/stock use. I have several other kits for other purposes, but this combo is the most compact and unobtrusive of the lot.

Cheaper than Olympus alternatives., Durable, Great Picture Quality, Lightweight, Simple Controls, adjustable angle on EVF

Not good grip, Poor EVF, Still bulkier than Olympus equivalent, the Pen, Ugly as sin

Traveling with a camera is all about trade offs. For me getting to the destination and being able to take the shot is more important than getting the perfect image. Carrying around a DSLR all day just isn't much fun.

Good evening, DPR forumers. Monday I received my GX9 kit + 20 1.7, and today I took them for a spin on the Oregon Coast. The weather was less than ideal (surprise surprise, that's Spring in Oregon...), but it gave me a chance to really push this little Lumix to its limits.
