The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 is an ambitious compact camera with a big sensor, a wide-aperture lens, and 4K video recording, but it falls just short of top honors.

  • +

Large image sensor. Wide aperture zoom lens. Sharp EVF. Top-notch high ISO performance. Speedy autofocus. 11.3fps burst shooting. Excellent control layout. 4K video capture with 4K photo mode. Integrated Wi-Fi. Hot shoe.

  • -

Expensive. Bulky. Overactive video autofocus. Sensor resolution limits detail. No built-in flash. Fixed LCD doesn't support touch input. Lacks microphone input.

When the LX100 was initially announced it created quite a buzz in the photography world, with many speculating that Panasonic would have a hit on their hands.

  • +

Built-in EVF is a real plus; Impressive image quality from larger sensor; Fast maximum aperture useful

  • -

Lacking both a variangle and touchscreen LCD; Zoom range is a touch lacking; EVF colour rendition not perfect

At its core, the LX100 may be a compact with a big sensor and bright lens, but rather than adopting the 1in sensor deployed by Sony on its RX100 series, Canon on the G7X, and indeed Panasonic itself on the Lumix FZ1000, the LX100 has gone for one of the company's larger Four Thirds sensors.

  • +

Great quality from (mildly-cropped) Four Thirds sensor., Maintains diagonal field of view with 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9., Useful lens range with bright aperture., Decent-sized electronic viewfinder., 4k video with in-camera photo grabbing., Fast continuous shooting up to 11fps at full resolution.

  • -

Screen isn't touch-sensitive and doesn't tilt., Corner softness at 50-75mm unless stopped-down to f8., Below average stabilisation for stills and video., EVF sometimes suffers from rainbow artefacts for me., No built-in flash., No microphone input., No built-in ND filter.

The LX100 is a very specific tool - a usefully small camera with an impressively bright lens and good sized sensor. Its short zoom and low pixel count will limit its appeal but dependable image quality and excellent hands-on controls make this one of the best zoom compacts we've ever tested.

  • +

Excellent stills image quality - especially in Raw, Unsurpassed combination of large sensor and bright lens, Impressive and usable video capabilities, Comprehensive and well-designed direct controls (with good customization options), Fast, responsive behavior, Classic looks and handling provide...

  • -

JPEG noise reduction and sharpening are rather crude at low ISOs, Lens range can be limiting, 12MP may not be enough for some users, Manually positioning an AF point is awkward (and workaround limits customization choices), Focus peaking often too subtle to see, Separate clip-on flash simply...

Panasonic’s LX100 is the top-of-the-line camera in the company’s compact LX series. Compared to other LX models, it is the first camera with an MFT (Micro Four Thirds) sensor. However, the camera doesn’t use the whole image sensor area of 17.3x13mm, so its crop factor is 2.2x instead of the 2.0x of...

With the LX100, Panasonic joins an elite club: It's now one of a small handful of manufacturers that can sell you a compact enthusiast camera with both a larger-than-average image sensor and a zoom lens. And believe us when we say that cameras like these are popular for good reason.

  • +

Great ergonomics will appeal to experienced photographers, Built-in, roomy and high-resolution electronic viewfinder, Very large image sensor for a fixed-lens camera with zoom lens (albeit no aspect ratio actually uses the whole sensor surface).

  • -

Not truly pants pocket-friendly, Relatively low resolution compared to rivals (but that's mostly mitigated in low-light / high ISO shooting), Base sensitivity is higher than rivals, No built-in neutral-density filter, Relatively short zoom has limited telephoto reach, Strong uncorrected distortion...

The Panasonic LX100 is a relatively compact premium digital camera. Its 16 MP Four-Thirds sensor, being used with a 2.2X crop-factor, rather than the usual 2X, delivers exceptional image-quality in multiple aspect-ratios while keeping an ultra-wide field-of-view most of the time.

  • +

    Extremely low image-noise, Superb detail-retention, Ultra-wide field-of-view, Ultra-Bright F/1.7 - 2.8 maximum aperture, Excellent resistance to chromatic aberrations, Uniform lens brightness, Ultra-fast autofocus, Instant shutter-lag, Fast shot-to-shot speed, Smooth high-quality 4K Ultra-HD video,...

  • -

Below-average Auto White-Balance, Low color accuracy, Slow optical zoom, Half-press required for Exposure-Priority and correct Live-Histogram, Accident-prone EC dial and control-ring, 1s Filming delay, Poor tripod mount placement, Short battery-life

22 December 2014

With really good photo and video quality, a great set of features and generally class-leading performance, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 is probably one of our favorite compact cameras ever. It's not for the inexperienced, though.

  • +

The Panasonic LX100 delivers really good photo and video quality, a great set of features, and class-leading performance.

  • -

It's got a fixed LCD and the lens really needs a hood to minimize flare.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 design and specs are good but price is bit higher than competitors from Canon and Sony, but for larger term it may worth the money.

The LX100 puts the large Four Thirds (that’s 4/3″ or 1.33″) sensor inside of a compact camera body that’s on roughly par with the Canon G16 line of cameras in terms of overall size.

The Panasonic Lumix LX 100 – A near perfect camera for a select group of people. Let me begin by identifying who this camera is not for. This is not a camera for amateur photographers.

  • +

    Fast/accurate auto-focus, Good Image Quality

  • -

    Limited Zoom

The LX100 is a great grab-and-go camera for enthusiasts or people who just love taking great pictures. The micro 4/3rds sensor is huge for a camera this size and it pays off with great pictures. The manual controls (with the exception of focus) are also great.

Focus is a little slow when taking videos and manual focus is awkward.

This camera is so good, I have to reconsider what I want when I upgrade by ILC camera. I've never had a flagship SLR/ILC in the digital era, but this camera is so feature rich, image quality may be the only thing a DSLR has over it.

  • +

Adjustable Filters, Compact, Fast lens, Good Value, Large Buffer, Responsive

  • -

    Lacks Flip-screen, Lens flare

I understand why this camera has been getting quite a few fans around the world, but I'm reviewing this package, and not the camera itself (plenty of reviews on the listing for the camera itself. I'm reviewing the package that I bought.

I'm blown away by the video abilities. Just shot an interview with the LX and the footage is literally game changing. This is a GH4 in your pocket, no joke. It's easy to use and in the right lighting situation, this camera outshines ALL other brands. Panasonic, you did it.
