The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R is a solid budget option for Micro Four Thirds shooters looking for an affordable telephoto zoom lens.

  • +

Inexpensive. Good telephoto zoom range. Sharp through most of its zoom range.

  • -

Plastic lens mount. Performance suffers at the edges of the frame. Not optically stabilized. Modest aperture.

The Olympus 40-150mm Æ’/4-5.6 M.Zuiko fared well in our tests, offering excellent performance up to 100mm, and above-average performance at 150mm. For the PEN system user looking for a portable telephoto option to supplement the 14-42mm kit lens, they should look no further.

This telephoto zoom for Four Thirds system compatible cameras is available from around £210 and sports a fast, silent focusing motor.

The Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 R is a quite good entry-level telephoto zoom lens. It may not be a cracker in terms of delivered resolution but it is no show-stopper either. The image quality is quite impressive in the low to mid portion of the zoom range.

Gary Wolstenholme reviews the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6, a telephoto zoom lens for Four Thirds system compatible cameras.

  • +

Excellent value for money, Excellent sharpness, especially in the centre, Lightweight and compact, Focuses close for a telephoto zoom, Fast AF

  • -

A lens hood would make this lens perfect for the price (although it is very resistant to flare anyway)

I've already given my review. Had a chance to do some shot locally and wanted to share a couple images that show off how nice this lens is. Both were shot around 2 pm and it was very sunny. You really do get a lot of "bang for your buck".

Recently purchased an OM-D E-M5 for my wife to use as second-shooter. I have the pro glass for E-M1. Purchased this to give her a lightweight tele and was blown away by its performance, compactness and totally silent AF. Often steal it for use when doing sunlit sports video footage now...

  • +

Fantastic Value Lens, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Good contrast, Lightweight, Silent AF, Tack-sharp, Very Compact For 80-300

  • -

No lens hood supplied, Plastic Lens Mount

This lens packs a tremendous amount of quality for something so light and inexpensive. At 45 mm, stopped down a bit, it's hard to tell any difference from my 45 mm f 1.8 prime. Even at full telephoto results are excellent at f 7.1, f8; a little soft but very acceptable at f 5.6.

  • +

remarkably good performance for size/weight; very lightweight

  • -

slow, best performance at 150 at f8

Great lens for the money. Well-made, light, compact, and works well with the camera. It is easily and quickly "swapped" with other lenses. The image is sharp at all settings. It's great for traveling and birding and fits easily into day sack.

My advice is to buy lenses that are made exactly for your camera like this one. I love the lens and it works perfectly with the camera. Dont buy the lenses from specific lens manufacturers that say for olympus!

I've had this lens for only a few days, so still the test mode. It covers a nice range and is excellent for close-up work. I think its a must-have for anyone buying the M10.
