The Nikon D3500 doesn't offer a lot of upgrades, but cements its value as a strong entry-level camera thanks to a lower price point.

  • +

Compact. Affordable. 24MP resolution. 5fps continuous shooting. Automatic image transfer via Bluetooth. In-camera shooting guide for beginners.

  • -

Fixed LCD omits touch support. Contrast-based live view focus not ideal for video. No mic input.

Like its D3400 predecessor, the new Nikon D3500 is a modestly priced but well-equipped camera that takes really good pictures and is an excellent learning tool for those new to DSLRs.

  • +

Affordable, Good image quality, Feature-rich, Excellent battery life, In-camera raw processing

  • -

Fixed LCD, No touch capabilities, Modest video AF performance

Nikon is doing everything it can lately to regain its position in the camera world with the announcement of their new flagship mirrorless cameras the Z7 and the Z6. But those are specialty items, cameras that are targeted for professionals and enthusiasts.

Is this the best entry-level DSLR you can buy? We think it might be...

  • +

Value for money, All-round image quality, Beginner friendliness, Responsive autofocus, 5fps continuous shooting

  • -

Fixed rear screen, No 4K video, Bulkier than mirrorless rivals

Nikon’s latest entry into the budget DSLR category, the D3500 is bundled with an AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens, which offers great results for a kit lens. Under the hood, you’ll find a brand new 24.2MP sensor, ISO range of 100-25,600 – perfect for low-light shooting – and nippy 5fps continuous...

The D3500 is a solid, well-specified entry-level DSLR that gives beginners good handling, great performance and real value for money. Canon chose to build down to a price rather than up to an expectation with this D3500 rival.

  • +

Good quality kit lens, Very good image quality, Fast and silent autofocus, Unexpectedly snappy live view, Great for keen learners, Value for money

  • -

Fixed rear screen, Video is HD rather than 4K, Chunky compared to a mirrorless camera

The new Nikon D3500 retains the same core feature-set as its predecessor, the D3400, but presents it in a smaller, lighter and more logical design that's very reminiscent of the mid-range D5600 camera.

I would love to have given this a 4.5 and not a 4. It is a great working camera. The focusing system is not foolproof, particularly in dim light but it works well. I haven't tested it with birds in flight but I focused on a moving car. I wish it had WI FI, either built in or with an adapter.

Internally Nikon's entry level dSLR, the D40 line, plateaued at the D3300. The D3500 is fundamentally just a reheat: same 24 MP sensor, same Expeed processor, same 11 pt AF system, same 420 pixel RGB metering, same 5 fps drive, and same 100 shot buffer.

While I preferred a different bag, I love this camera. It performs great and I am having a fun time learning it. The two included lenses have been all I need so far but I like that I can buy others that fit this camera.

This is a great little camera. I say little because I use a full frame Nikon D810 daily with a 70-200 f2.8, and the 3500 is minuscule in comparison. Despite the small size I can get 90% of what I'm used to getting with the big camera.

  • +

Size, value, MUCH smaller than full frame SLR, better control and picture quality than most point 'n shoots

  • -

Bigger than a point 'n shoot, less capable than a full frame SLR

I absolutely love this camera. It has great features like Bluetooth sync to your phone. It's also very easy to use and very user-friendly with guide mode to guide you as well as coming with online classes to teach you how to use your camera good quality and the photo quality is amazing!

Had the D3500 for about two weeks now. We'll just get this out of the way, unless you feel like you could benefit from the redesigned grip or the longer battery life, I see no real need to upgrade from the D3400.

Loving this new camera of mine. I am new to photography and having such camera has been fun to play with, however I believe I will always be learning how to use it! First, the picture quality is excellent. What pushes this camera to the top for me is that the guide in the camera makes it easy for inexperienced users to take very good pictures. WAF is high on this one.

  • +

    Ease of use. Picture quality.

  • -

    None so far.
