The Nikkor DX 18-55mm VR is a classy budget kit lens which puts many rival models to shame. The 3x range and f3.5-5.6 focal ratio may be unremarkable, but with both SWM focusing and VR facilities, it’s a step above most models for the money.

+
VR effectively combats camera-shake., Relatively quick and quiet SWM focusing., Compact and light., Good performance for the money.
-
-
Front section rotates when focusing., Basic manual focusing facilities., Doesn't come with lens hood., Previous Mark II lens better in some tests.

This is an improvement over the older version. Nikon’s new optics offer excellent resolution at this price and the VR system is an added bonus for a lens that’s only £10 more expensive than the older model. The VR is worth having even if it fails to live up to Nikon’s three-stop claims.
-
+
Resolution, zoom action, VR.
-
-
Wideangle chromatic aberration, plastic build.

Tne 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G AF-S VR is certainly a worthy upgrade to Nikon's already well-regarded kit lens. The addition of the Vibration Reduction system, which seems equally capable as those previously only available on more expensive lenses such as the 18-200mm VR, greatly extends shooting...
-
+
Decent optical quality, Effective vibration reduction system, Very good macro performance
-
-
All-plastic construction, Rotating front element annoying for filter users, Somewhat susceptible to flare, with little help from near-useless lens hood, Short travel of focus ring makes critical manual focus rather tricky

Nikon offers tyros an option to upgrade to Vibration Reduction technology at a very nice price ($199, street) with this digital-only (DX) kit lens. A 27-82.5mm equivalent, this 3X zoom also sports a near-silent SWM focusing motor. HANDS ON

Don't be discouraged by this lens just because it's a kit lens, for entry-level camera. As far as Resolution and Contrast goes... From 18-35mm from the center, to over half way to the edges...this is actually one of Nikons better DX lenses.

When this lens came without a pouch or hood and had only a soft plastic rear cap, I asked on a photography forum whether I should be concerned about other corners having been cut.

It's obvious reading some of these reviews that a lot of you aren't experienced or semi-pro photographers. This lens is an "everyday shooter," meaning I wouldn't use this lens to shoot a wedding.

considering I dropped my previous lens in Boston Harbour, anything is an upgrade. But seriously though, this works as well as advertised, and runs without a hitch. My lens didn't have a scratch or a dent on it. Even had that new lens smell (if there is one)

This is a great starter lens. If you pair this up with a telephoto lens, you've got yourself a complete set at a reasonable price. The build quality is good and I can take pretty good pictures with this on my D40. If you're a beginner, go for this lens.

Pretty sharp, good value, VR, Autofocus with pretty much all Nikon DSLR. Aside from plastic mount, the quality seems decent. No loose or rattling parts.
-
-
Plastic mount.

Works really well and takes great photos. But there is no vibration reduction so the photos can blur easier than with some other lenses.

+
Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight, Quick Focus
-
-
No stablizer

I purchased this lens back in October and have been meaning to write to say that 1 Stop Camera actually called and left a message on our machine to let us know that they sent the lens to us. I was very surprised to get such personalized service and wanted to commend them for that.

I bought this camera after drooling after it for months. It has lived up to almost all of my expectations. The pictures I take look more professional than with any other camera I've used.

Picture quality is very good. Functionality and settings are very good. It's slightly smaller than the average Digital SLR so it's easier to tote around town.

I wish more of the Nikon lenses worked with this camera body. I wish there was an image stabilization feature, especially when using the longer lenses.
