If you're not a serious shutterbug, you'll appreciate the ease of using the fast-shooting Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera.

  • +

Incredibly fast focus and 60fps burst shooting. Tilting touch-screen LCD. Built-in flash. Quite compact. 1/16,000-second electronic shutter. Includes compact zoom lens. Built-in Wi-Fi.

  • -

Some autofocus inconsistency. Small sensor limits depth of field control. No EVF option. 4K video limited to 15fps. No mic input. Slow 1/60-second flash sync. Omits mechanical shutter. Lens shows heavy distortion when shooting Raw.

Which cameras are the competition for the J5 is debatable. If you're a Nikon fan, perhaps one of its DSLR owners, you may find the J5 a tempting purchase instead of buying a compact camera. It has the same size sensor as some of the premium compacts on the market, such as the .

  • +

Touch sensitive screen, Tilting screen, Inbuilt Wi-Fi and NFC

  • -

4K recording only at 15fps, Slow shot to shot speeds, No viewfinder

It looks like Nikon is heading in the right direction in more ways than one with the Nikon 1 J5.

  • +

Excellent 20 fps burst speed, Fast, accurate autofocus, particularly for facial detection, Small body, Tilting touchscreen, Sharp, colorful images, User-friendly design

  • -

Smaller sensor than most mirrorless cameras, Takes Micro SD cards

Nikon's newest J-series camera, as of April 2015, the Nikon 1 J5 is a compact, yet powerful ILC (Interchangeable Lens Camera) bursting with the latest technologies and DSLR-rivaling performance specs.

  • +

Good upgrades over Nikon 1 J4, including 20.8-megapixels of resolution, Silent shutter that can record images at a speed up to 1/16,000th of a second, Little to no shutter lag

  • -

Image quality is adequate for small-to-mid-sized prints with the kit lens, but it's a little soft with large prints, Control button collection looks more like a point-n-shoot camera than an advanced model, Camera interface is improved from past Nikon 1 mirrorless models, but still requires too many...

There are few reservations, but the pros outweigh the cons, and we enjoyed our time with it. If you’re looking for a small travel camera, definitely keep this one in mind. For $500 that includes a decent 10-30mm VR 3x zoom, this is a really good deal.

The Nikon J5 is the newest in Nikon's 1 series mirrorless camera line and is the first in the series to offer 20MP resolution. (Note: the first Nikon 1 cameras had 10MP, while the most recent, the V3, had 18MP resolution).

The Nikon 1 J5 is a compact mirrorless with a unique 20 megapixels sensor which provides ultra-fast Phase-Detect autofocus, 60 FPS continuous drive and 4K Ultra-HD video at 15 FPS. The J5 packs all this into a sturdy compact body which features dual control-dials and a traditional mode-dial.

Noise-free until ISO 400, Nicely usable images until ISO 3200, Ultra-fast autofocus until very low light, Excellent metering, Virtually no blackout without Instant Review, Superb shot-to-shot speed without Review, Quick and responsive, Good LCD sharpness, Extremely quiet, Solid build quality

  • -

Limited dynamic-range, Cropped LCD coverage & not Exposure-Priority, Poor LCD visibility in bright and low light, Video recording delay, Instant Review impacts performance, Cropped field-of-view for 4K Ultra-HD video, Short battery-life

Nikon is to be commended for greatly improving the photo and video quality of the Nikon 1 series. The new $500 J5 is the first camera in the lineup I wholeheartedly recommend. This is a great camera for parents with children, as it really does a great job capturing frenetic kids in motion — or other...

Correcting some disappointing design choices of the Nikon 1 J4, the updated Nikon 1 J5 camera features a more photographer-friendly layout, a brand-new CX-format 1"-type image sensor, and upgraded EXPEED 5A image processor.

6 January 2016

The J5 is fun to use, and it offers a good set of special effect features that will appeal to those going from a point and shoot camera to their first interchangeable lens model.

This is absolutely ridiculous! The camera overheats and shuts down after about 15 mins of recording in 1080p30FPS mode, and that is in WINTER time, I imagine that in summer I will not be able to get even 5 minutes worth of video out of this thing.

15 July 2015

I have been using this camera for a week. It continues to amaze me. It is a very comfortable backup to my Nikon D7100. I think I will be using it more than the SLR because of its weight and convenes. The pictures are amazing. It captures pictures faster than the SLR so it is great for action shots.

Great camera! The best 1" sensor I ever seen that can compete for example with (not so old) 18 MP Canon cameras. And 10-30 VR PD Zoom lens is not so sharp at the corners (as older 11-27,5 lens). 4K video at 15 fps is useless (I remember old film cameras at 16 fps were much better).
