If a visitor from another planet arrived on Earth and asked to see the perfect specimen of what a digital camera and lens should look like, this combination might be the best choice. In terms of design and construction, fit and feel, the Leica M with 50mm APO Summicron is nearly perfect.

This version also works perfectly with all LEICA M kameras, including the newest LEICA M9 digital, with the use of a simple adapter ring . Focus, metering, and everything is exactly as if it were an M lens.

It took me a while but now that I own and use this lens on an almost daily basis I have to say it may be my favorite all around lens for the M9 replacing the 35 Summicron but I also adore the 35.

I traditionally have been a Canon DSLR user. With my move over the last couple of years to more manual lenses (typically the more recent Zeiss offerings on the Canon mount) and a desire to find high quality small systems I can take traveling, my road led me to Leica.

This is heralded as the most optically perfect lens ever made nd has tested as such in the lab. But, the proof is in the real world across a broad spectrum of cameras. I have shot this lens on the M246, M240, Mono 240, M7, and M6TTL in color and b&w.

the lens is great - size, construction, aperature, feel, built in lens hood, bokeh. however the lens flare is just too weird with big white blotches or amoeba like spot. I don't mind flare if you can expect it and work with it but when it comes in randomly and obtrusively then it becomes a...

1979's Summicron 50 has aged very well and remains a far better lens than most of us will ever want or need.

Outstanding sharpness, no distortion, exquisite build, MUCH cheaper than 50 APO or Lux.

    Bokeh can be unpredictable, expensive

I had used this lens when I had a M6. I have to say while a great lens, better than any Japanese SLR lens, it did not offer the magical "Glow" I have read so much about. I have an old 40/2 Summicron for a CL that I liked better.

  • +

    Excellend lens, good bokeh, sharp

  • -

A touch flat when compared to Zeiss glass,, Not legenday sharp as some claim
