While the Hero4 Black has been discontinued, you can still find it for sale and Hero4 models are still popular with users. But before considering the Hero4 Black, the only question you should ask yourself is whether or not you want to capture 4K.

  • +

Great picture quality at 4K resolution, Ability to capture high frame rates, 12-megapixel photos at burst speeds of 30 fps, More image control

  • -

Battery life is inadequate, No preview screen, Difficult to make menu changes without app

If you're looking for a small action camera that can capture video at 4K, the GoPro Hero4 Black is the one to get.

  • +

4K capture. Slow motion HD capability. Rugged design. ProTune recording. Time Lapse photo option. Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Waterproof to 131 feet with case. Many mounts and accessories available. Includes editing software.

  • -

The GoPro Hero4 Silver is still our top choice for most people, but if you need the best video quality with the most shooting options, the Hero4 Black is it.

  • +

The GoPro Hero4 Black delivers best-in-class video at resolutions up to 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 120fps. Wide assortment of mounting options from GoPro and third-party manufacturers.

  • -

Battery life can feel painfully short and due to a redesign you can't use older batteries with the Hero4. No option for in-camera digital image stabilization and it still needs a housing to be waterproof.

There's good reason why GoPro is synonymous with action cameras: Its models deliver the best overall performance. The Hero4 Black is GoPro's premier cam, and it mostly earns that title, with detailed image quality, steady-looking video and true 4K/UHD recording (up to a best-in-class 30 frames per...

  • +

Very detailed images, Excellent mobile app and easy Wi-Fi pairing, Full 4K/24p capability, Huge collection of accessories

  • -

Pricey, No LCD touch screen (though you can add one), Video and photos can look a tad hazy, Case muffles audio

It’s a rare camera that can count A-list cinematographers, action sports athletes, drone photographers and professional sports teams in its user base.

  • +

Faster frame rates at multiple resolutions; revamped controls are easier to use; Wi-Fi connectivity more responsive.

  • -

Short battery life; requires new batteries if you’re upgrading from older model; no manual control over shutter speed.

The GoPro Hero 4 Black is the definition of a flagship: fancy, high quality and expensive. At $500 and not including a touchscreen like the less expensive Silver, it's hard to justify for most amateur filmmakers.

  • +

Top image quality, good low light performance, great frame rate and resolution options, loaded with useful features.

The GoPro Hero 4 Black is, as can be expected, the best GoPro ever made. At $500, plus $80 and up for the Smart Remote and other accessories, it's also one of the most expensive brought to market.

  • +

High-quality video recording in an exceptionally small package., Easy-to-use interface., Amazing assortment of mounting accessories

  • -

Battery life still limited to less than one hour with high-fps, high-res video., Device becomes warm with continuous filming., Expensive compared to previous Hero generations.

Heard/saw so many good things before buying but have had a bitterly useless experience with the camera constant freezing, despite updates and linking to Quik - the GoPro website's support pages were utterly useless. A grossly overrated brand.

My 17 yo did some serious homework before buying this! This was the best deal around and of course a great product! Only had it a few days and it's been in the pool many times and the pics are great!

I'm primarily a still photographer, but I spend a lot of time in or around the water so I thought the GoPro would come in handy. I'll admit I haven't used it a whole lot, but I really like the quality video that I've captured.

Camera quality is good, its just a pain finding out how to mount good enough for low light conditions since we use it for bowfishing. Does what we need it too for the most part. Gave it four stara becuase battery life is awful.

First goPro experience has not been a great one. Firstly the GoPro charging cable only works in certain positions, as does the HDMI. The camera heats up very quickly even when not recording, just being on and being controlled by the app and the battery lasts about 30-40 minutes, again even when not...

This is one of the coolest cameras I own... it's got its own nitch, but definitely fun to play with and everything is so small... Probably the only problem I see is that the battery life has a bit to be desired, and wish it came with a bacpac so you can see what you are filming, but for the money...

Somehow, this exceeded expectations. It's durable and takes high quality images and video. I also love how easy it is to connect with the iPhone app and look at pictures and recorded video in real time. I take it everywhere and use it as an everyday camera.
