A couple of weeks ago, Garmin announced the Forerunner 745 and HRM-Pro . After three weeks on my wrist it's easy to see lots of appeal in the 745 even if it doesn't fit my needs.
-
+
Lightweight and comfortable for extended wear, Full featured health, activity, and exercise tracker, Accurate outdoor track performance, Outstanding software providing all the data you could ever want, Support for a vast number of sports and activities
-
-
Expensive, No golf support
The Garmin Forerunner 745 is a solid choice for a multi-sport watch that offers training insight, though other watches boast a better battery life. There’s a lot to like about the Garmin Forerunner 745.
-
+
Easy to set up and use, Robust activity and training data, Access to Garmin Connect, Comfortable for its size
-
-
Limited smartwatch functionality, Small display, Battery life
The Garmin Forerunner 745 delivers rich sports tracking and the new training insights are useful as long as you make a chest strap your training partner. What's hard to ignore are the price and gripes with battery life.

+
Small, light design, Useful recovery advisor feature, Solid sports tracking
It’s been said that the FR945 is simply a plastic Fenix 6, which, is mostly true. And in the case of the FR745, it’s basically just a map-less FR945. And, that’s mostly true. Sure, there’s minor nuances to each of those statements – namely being the FR745 has slightly less battery (and heft) than...
Garmin Forerunner 745 Watch GPS Running and Triathlon Smartwatch Made for Athletes New Features available through a free software update through the Garmin Connect app Improved VO2 max: Rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and feel: After a workout, an athlete can record how hard it was and how it felt.
The Forerunner 745 is another great multisport watch from Garmin that takes most of what makes its top model the market leader, minus the onboard maps, and condenses it into a smaller, lighter and cheaper package.
-
+
Pros: slim and light, real buttons, good screen, accurate GPS, good heart rate, extensive stats for multisport/triathlon, comprehensive health tracking, great training analysis and recovery, offline Spotify, basic smartwatch features, Garmin Pay, wifi.
-
-
Cons: expensive, no touchscreen, interface can be a bit clunky, no maps, limited Garmin Pay support by banks.
If you find the myriad of features of the Garmin Forerunner 945 confusing/overwhelming, the Forerunner 745 might just be the ideal multisport watch for you. Apart from some obscure fitness features (and battery life), the two watches are almost identical and equally as capable.
-
+
Sharp screen, Usual Garmin performance, Almost identical to Forerunner 945 but lighter and cheaper
-
-
Comparatively short battery life, A Forerunner 945 on offer might be a better deal
You can’t really fault this multisports watch for its abilities, while giving you the best that Garmin has to offer in smartwatch features. The new training and workout features are welcomed here, even if they’re no longer unique to this model.
-
+
Smaller and lighter case to wear, Reliable sports tracking, New suggested workouts
-
-
Battery life isn't the greatest, Expensive, Sleep tracking is iffy
An excellent triathlon watch that’s also great for pretty much all other sports, but battery life isn’t the best
-
+
Lightweight, low profile design, Excellent training and recovery insights, Packed with features
-
-
Occasionally inaccurate heart rate readings, Shorter battery life than rivals, No full maps
The Forerunner 745 refines, rather than reworks the 735XT’s design, which is in my mind no bad thing. I’ve always liked the Garmin Forerunner device’s designs. This is because, despite having an overt fitness focus and aesthetic, they strike a nice middle ground between Garmin’s fashion-focussed...

It's slightly overpriced
I upgraded from a 10 yr old polar hrm that I loved but out of production watchband broke. I originally went to the Garmin instinct solar (loved the solar but the screen was too small for me to read and I realized I really wanted the music). My 745 has been outstanding.
We have long worn Garmin watches in our household. Generally, this watch has met my expectations with the exception of the wrist -based heart rate and pulse ox measurements. The wrist-based heart rate feature is not as accurate as a chest strap.

Does all I need and some more

Price could be a little less
Some of my favorite features are being able to customize my workout screen and being able to paginate between multiple screens. I also like the course navigation and alerting that I can enable during excerize. The manual really does not do this watch enough justice.
Glad I got it! Still learning all of the buttons and options.
I have a Garman 735 XL. The battery life is about the same. No need to change the watch
I bought this watch because of the range of features but most prominently the ability to get heart rate while exercising without the need to wear a chest strap monitor. This has been the main disappointment.
This is a follow-up review because Im so thrilled with this watch. I finished their 5k training olan to build speed and now in the 1/2 mara plan... these kept me motivated during our Michigan 15F days this last month. / Im keeping a close eye on body battery and stress level to increase my recovery.
I bought this for my wife as a replacement for her venerable 920xt, which is still kicking. The watch has a lot of great features, is highly customizable, tracks every activity you can think of, and was easy to set up and sync with my wife's Connect app.The issue? Battery life.
