The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM is a sharp zoom with very strong image stabilization. It's not an f/2.8 lens, but it's still an excellent performer.

  • +

Lightweight, compact build., Very sharp, even at f/4., Strong optical stabilization., 1:3.7 magnification., L-series quality., Optional tripod collar available.

  • -

Not f/2.8., Some visible distortion., Dimmed corners.

Need a light, compact, high-quality telephoto zoom lens? Most kits do and telephoto zoom lenses do not get much better than this one. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is one that everyone can find uses for, none will tire of holding, a significant percentage of photographers can afford and...

Relatively compact and lightweight, this new zoom is easy to live with and a stellar performer. Even so, autofocus, stabilisation and outright image quality are no better than from Tamron’s similarly priced 70-200mm f/2.8 G2.

  • +

Fabulously sharp, Lightweight for a 70-200mm lens

  • -

Stabilization and AF doesn't outperform the equivalent Tamron lens

There's no better zoomlens than this one. This one even beats my amazing 70-200 2.8L IS II.The sharpness is amazing. Most of the pictures on http://facebook.com/totaalfotografie (on the Costa Rica wildlife section) is made with this lens!Only buy the 2.8 if you have to! Otherwise buy this one!

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at how this compact telephoto zoom lens performs. Canon's EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM costs around £800 and has an Image Stabiliser, silent Ultrasonic focusing with full time manual override and is sealed against dust and moisture.

  • +

Excellent optical quality, Superb build quality, Very effective image stabilisation, Fast to focus, Sealed against weather and dust, Light weight

  • -

Sometime miss-focuses near minimum focus distance

Canon's EF 70-200mm f4.0L IS USM really delivers the goods on both cropped and full-frame bodies. The range may not extend as far as 70-300mm models, but the optical quality is superb and as an 'L' lens, the build quality is also excellent.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is clearly one of the best EF mount telephoto zoom lenses available on the market. The lens shows outstanding image quality with particular strength in the 70-135mm range.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens captures impressively sharp images and is optically stabilized. It's a good option for shooters who can't afford an f/2.8 zoom.

  • +

Optical stabilization system., Fixed aperture through zoom range., Relatively light., Sharp images.

  • -

Edges soft when zoomed., Adding a tripod collar is expensive.

Specification 70-200mm lenses are one of the most sought-after choices in any range of lenses, but full frame f/2.8 models do have the drawback of being big and heavy, as well as expensive.

I have arthritis in my hands so I was concerned about the weight of the lens. I had nothing to fear. No problem at all with the weight though I would not advise anyone with the same problem to go for a heavier lens than this one.The photos are coming out so much crisper with this lens.very happy...

This lens is superb in all aspects except for one which I will talk about later. The image quality is absolutely top notch; the sharpness we all want is there, the colors and contrast are exactly what you would expect from an L lens, and the background blur is creamy at all distances that I've...

Awesome lens, like to work with it! The image quality is very good. This lens really doesn't have any cons! You can find examples at: Hochzeitsfotografie Frankfurt .

I bought this lens rather than the f2.8 version because of it's size and weight. If compared to the f2.8 version, this lens is approximately half the weight, and noticably smaller. This lens is a joy to hold and use because it's really light, and yet it produces outstanding pictures.

  • +

Very lightweight, built like a tank. Zoom ring and the focus ring are all smooth.

  • -

Sound of the motor is audible.

I have used this lens for about two months now. Focus speed is lightning fast and accurate and the L glass is perfection. It's a little heavy for a walk around lens (I use the 17-85 mm for that) but it is always in my bag. You won't be disappointed.

Strength: Excellent image quality . Lightweight Image Stabilization effective Weakness: Bokeh not as pronounced as F2.8 No tripod mount I made a comparison between this and the 70-200 F2.8 non IS, as they were around the same price.

Having the second focus takes a little getting used to. The front one seems touchy so it would move when I was taking pictures. Spent the weekend shooting wildlife and think I have the hang of it now.

After owning a 70-200 L IS 2.8 for 12 years (and loving the pictures) I needed to "lighten up" my camera bag for travel, and decided to go for the new 70-200 L IS 4.0. Great results straight out of the box, very much lighter and easier to carry around, probably the best sharpness in the pictures of...

This lens is awesome. Sharp, sharp, sharp. It is relatively light and well balanced on the 7D. It is tack sharp at all focal lengths, excellent contrast and colour. For me, one of the best zoom lenses in the market aand it is very comparable to the 2.8 version. But cheaper and absolutly lightweight.
