While the Canon EOS 1200D isn’t exactly going to dazzle in terms of its specification, it has a lot going for it when you consider its launch price of just under £350 without the kit lens.

  • +

Good, lightweight design; Great value for money; Performance at higher ISO settings; EOS companion app

  • -

Lacking Wi-fi as standard; Could benefit from more AF points

So what new features does the T5 / 1200D have to tempt the buying public? There's a new 18 Megapixel sensor providing an increase of 6 Megapixels on its predecessor, and a slightly bigger 3 inch screen witha bump in the resolution to 460k dots.

  • +

Excellent image quality and noise performance., 1080p HD video with manual exposure., 3 inch 460k LCD screen., Creative Auto mode., Free interactive tutorials for your smartphone.

  • -

Smallish optical viewfinder., No effects filters., No scene detect in Live View., No continuous AF for movies., No external microphone input.

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 sports an attractive price tag, but you can get a better entry-level SLR for a little bit more money.

  • +

Includes optically stabilized lens. Raw shooting support. Detailed images at high ISOs. 1080p video capture. On-screen shooting guide.

  • -

Fixed LCD. Pentamirror viewfinder. Slower autofocus. Burst shooting limited to 3fps. Small buffer when shooting Raw. No microphone input.

In February of this year, Canon announced their newest entry-level DSLR, the EOS Rebel T5 . Some of you will obviously know the EOS Rebel T5 i , which was released last year. Much like the T3 versus the T3 i , the T5 represents a stripped down version of the T5 i , or possibly even the SL1 .

  • +

All shooting modes produce accurate exposures and overall pleasing images, Live View shooting allows for compact-like point-n-shoot capabilities, Good overall performance, Great overall image quality, Pop-up flash is always ready if you need it, Large 3.0-inch LCD is easy to see in most lighting...

  • -

Lacking the versatile and useful convenience features like WiFi, No continuous AF shooting videos, LCD does not tilt or swivel, Only 1 command dial on the camera body, No external audio input, No built-in Image Stabilization

For what it is and whom it’s intended for, the T5 is a decent camera. We wouldn’t go out of our way to recommend it, especially since there are less expensive options available like the recently reviewed, lighter weight Sony Alpha A5000 .

A budget camera that gets you started with taking great pictures, but its interface and design are less appealing than those of the more capable Canon T5i.

  • +

Relatively low cost, Great image quality

  • -

Live View focus seems sluggish, Physical controls can be awkward to navigate

While it's a perfectly fine camera when you're making the jump from a point-and-shoot, there are better choices than the Canon EOS Rebel T5.

  • +

While it doesn't stand out particularly, the Canon EOS Rebel T5 does produce nice photos typical of its price class, its performance isn't bad, and it has a comfortable design.

  • -

The feature set is limited, even by entry-level standards.

You can't really fault Canon for not changing up much in the beginner-friendly Rebel series over the years. The camera maker appears to have struck a chord with this line; Canon's Rebel T3i still ranks as one of the most popular DSLRs in the industry.

  • +

Compact, light body; Easy-to-access controls; Excellent image quality in good light

  • -

Some graininess at high ISOs and in low light; Poor autofocus in video; Some lag when taking multiple consecutive shots

We’ve seen quite a number of cameras of all shapes and sizes launched over the past few months, and this time around, Canon has been generous enough to send us a DSLR that is meant for photography newbies, or if you’re just looking for an affordable camera for travel and casual use, in the form of...

  • +

    Good camera for photography newbies

  • -

Obvious noise and discoloration at higher ISOs

I purchased the Canon T5 as a mid-range camera to save my Nikon D4 from extreme environmental working hazards and conditions in the field. The T5 body seems small and lightweight for extra-large hands. I use a Vello battery grip to compensate, a major plus for extra support and handling.

  • +

Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Fast Shutter Speed, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, High ISO Performance, Large Clear LCD, Quiet

My son is thrilled with this camera! He has been taking pictures non-stop since Christmas morning. Low-light, outdoors, indoors, action shots...you name it! The pictures are beautiful! He is really enjoying the Zoom lens. It was a perfect choice for him.

  • +

The kit had everything he needed to start taking great pictures right away, especially since I charged up the battery the night before! ;)

Bought this camera as a replacement for an older Canon Rebel XT that worked GREAT for over 8 years. We shoot mainly family photos and our kids sporting events. On-paper the T5 2 SHOULD be a great step up from the old XT but I'm sorry to say we were really disappointed in the performance of the...

    - well built - easy to use - very sharp photos when taking still shots in good lighting - stills have great color - lenses, bag, etc. are good quality

  • -

    - terrible for action/sports shots - auto focus on this model is horrible (3/4 of action photos are blurry) - low-light shots are blurry

I am truly happy with this camera, and everything that comes with it!! The camera takes very clear pictures and stops action subjects with repeat shutter activation. I love the carry bag that it comes with as well as the two tripods.

This is a great camera for the price. I never had a DSLR before, just a point and shoot or a manuel camera with film from college for photography classes. It is easy to use and has tutorials built in. My sister has a Rebel T2 and was impressed with all we got for the price.
