Canon's EOS 5DS D-SLR has a high-resolution sensor that filters out color moiré, but it sacrifices a little detail in the process.

  • +

Highest resolution in class. 5fps burst shooting. Full-frame image sensor. Dual memory card slots. 61-point autofocus system. Intervalometer and time lapse support. Sharp rear display. Solid control layout. Medium and Small Raw capture modes. 1080p video.

  • -

Limited to ISO 12800. Optical low-pass filter detracts from detail. Omits in-camera Wi-Fi and GPS. Lacks built-in flash.

The Canon EOS 5DS R is the company's highest-resolution camera, building a 50MP sensor into a body that will be immediately familiar to existing 5D series users. The camera's autofocus has been upgraded though it still lags behind the best of its competitors for close-up work.

  • +

Class-leading 50.6MP image resolution, Pleasing out-of-camera colors, particularly skintones, 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points, 5 dual cross-type, high precision points offer uncanny precision with newer lenses, 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor enables iTR, and also rudimentary face...

  • -

Raw dynamic range limited compared to peers, Base ISO images can be noisier than the best of the competition, Low light performance limited compared to peers, ISO cap of 12,800 (6400 for Auto ISO) feels arbitrary and limiting, JPEGs not as sharp or detailed as some competitors, AF subject tracking...

Very large, heavy camera, Camera must be in video capture mode to capture video, No GPS or WiFi built-in, Battery seemed to go quickly during our tests, No 4K video capture, Dual card slots are SD and CF, not the same media (some may see this as positive), No built-in flash unit

CPN (Canon Professional Network) calls it "A Revolution in Resolution". The Canon EOS 5Ds and 5Ds R show us a level of detail that we've never seen before in a DSLR camera. The announcement of the 5Ds and 5Ds R brought high expectations and the arrival of these cameras offered few surprises.

Ever since Nikon began ditching low-pass filters and pushing the resolution of its high-end full-frame bodies to 36-megapixels, photographers have been waiting for Canon’s response.

  • +

High-resolution image sensor; familiar build and menu; USB 3.0; enhanced stability.

  • -

Poor battery life; limited video features; low ISO performance.

On February 6 2015, Canon announced the EOS 5DS and 5DS R, both 50.6 MP full frame DSLRs. These are currently (02/15) the highest pixel count full frame 35mm DSLRs available from any manufacturer.

It's not long since conventional photographer wisdom stated that no-one needed more than 12 megapixels. However, after Nikon reignited the megapixel race with the D800 , and with 250-megapixel cameras on the horizon, pixels (along with sensor size) are once again where it's at.

Canon EOS 5DS is the ultimate product for photographers as it has pulled up all the essential features and functionality that might suffice for a high-end professional camera, which can shoot videos as good as the still images. Although, the price seems high, the camera is worth the purchase.

Canon had dilly-dallied around the resolution conundrum for what seemed like an eternity. "Push beyond 22-megapixels? Golly, no way" was pretty much the message for years. And then it goes and releases a 50.6-megapixel full-frame DSLR, the EOS 5DS. And, frankly, it's bloomin' brilliant.

  • +

Hugely impressive image quality (when matched with best lenses and suitable shutter speeds)

  • -

No tilt/vari-angle screen, not the best for fast-moving subjects (high shutter speeds essential)

I have waited a long time for digital sensors to match professional slide film quality. The 5ds R fills the bill for me. Color depth and resolution match or exceed 6x9, and 6x6 quality...'Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner'

1 August 2015

The image quality of the 5Ds is amazing but it did not came as a surprise. With 50.6 MP on a full frame the pixel density is very similar (actually a little lower) compared to APS-C cameras like the 70D.

    High pixel count, weather sealed

Out of the Canon 5 series, I've owned the Mark i and iii prior to this camera, and have been shooting with the 5Ds for about a year and a half. At first I had issues producing sharp images consistently.

The 5DS is an AMAZING specialist camera (just like the 1DX Mark II).If you do studio portraits, architecture, or still-lifes, the 5DS is currently still the best 35mm-format DSLR that money can buy.

Ive owned this camera for almost a year. and Ive read numerous complaints that the 50mps is to sensitive and shows every flaw in bad shooting form. What people don't say is that this camera also shoots at 28mps in med Raw. which is almost as good as the MarkV in large Raw.

I rented this camera for an architecture shoot and three months later bought it before another shoot. I've used it only with the Canon 24mm f3.5 tilt/shift lens on a tripod and the combination has worked flawlessly. I love it.

Love it. Love large format cameras. Files are big; and when you do any mods, the files will get bigger. Need to plan for the amount of data you will acquire as you use this camera. I still haven't learned all the capabilities.

Love this camera!! I shoot at med raw at 28 meg pixels, hand holding. And if i shoot on tripod. I have option to up my image quality to 50.6! Love having that extra power if i want it!
