Canon's EOS 5DS D-SLR has a high-resolution sensor that filters out color moiré, but it sacrifices a little detail in the process.

  • +

Highest resolution in class. 5fps burst shooting. Full-frame image sensor. Dual memory card slots. 61-point autofocus system. Intervalometer and time lapse support. Sharp rear display. Solid control layout. Medium and Small Raw capture modes. 1080p video.

  • -

Limited to ISO 12800. Optical low-pass filter detracts from detail. Omits in-camera Wi-Fi and GPS. Lacks built-in flash.

The Canon EOS 5DS R is the company's highest-resolution camera, building a 50MP sensor into a body that will be immediately familiar to existing 5D series users. The camera's autofocus has been upgraded though it still lags behind the best of its competitors for close-up work.

  • +

Class-leading 50.6MP image resolution, Pleasing out-of-camera colors, particularly skintones, 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points, 5 dual cross-type, high precision points offer uncanny precision with newer lenses, 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor enables iTR, and also rudimentary face...

  • -

Raw dynamic range limited compared to peers, Base ISO images can be noisier than the best of the competition, Low light performance limited compared to peers, ISO cap of 12,800 (6400 for Auto ISO) feels arbitrary and limiting, JPEGs not as sharp or detailed as some competitors, AF subject tracking...

For the Canon faithful, a very high resolution body has been a long time coming. For generations, the company hovered around 20 Megapixels across its entire DSLR range, citing high ISO performance as a priority, but failing to deliver ultra high resolution files for the detail fanatics who desired...

  • +

Industry-leading 50 Megapixel resolution., Powerful 61-point AF system with custom presets., Bulb timer, intervalometer, varied mirror-lockup options., Enhanced viewfinder with lots of shooting information.

  • -

Needs the best lenses and precision technique., Noise creeps into files from 400 ISO., No Wifi, no 1080 video above 30p, no 4k, no hybrid AF., Non-articulated screen, focus peaking or zebra patterns.

Note: The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are basically the same camera. The only differences are the 5DS R has no low-pass filter, and costs about $200 more. The 5DS, like all of their 5D-series EOS models, is aimed at photographers who want the benefits of a full frame sensor, originally only available to...

  • +

AF and Metering are both incredibly fast and accurate, Live view allows you to shoot with the LCD, Full 1080p HD video capture produces beautiful videos, Outstanding overall image quality, Amazing detail from loads of resolution, 3.2-inch, 1.04 million dot LCD is great in all lighting conditions to...

  • -

Very large, heavy camera, Camera must be in video capture mode to capture video, No GPS or WiFi built-in, Battery seemed to go quickly during our tests, No 4K video capture, Dual card slots are SD and CF, not the same media (some may see this as positive), No built-in flash unit

3 July 2015

Wi-Fi connectivity is notable by its absence, although there is an optional Wireless File Transmitter add-on.

  • +

Full frame sensor, huge detail, Excellent AF, exposure and white balance, Extensive features and accessories

  • -

Huge file sizes, Fast shutter speeds or a sturdy tripod and mirror lock-up essential to get the best from the sensor, No Wi-Fi built-in

15 September 2015

The new Canon EOS 5DS DSLR offers the first full-frame sensor camera with image resolution higher than 50MP. The camera is the successor of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which uses a 22MP sensor and was introduced in 2012.

Ever since Nikon began ditching low-pass filters and pushing the resolution of its high-end full-frame bodies to 36-megapixels, photographers have been waiting for Canon’s response.

  • +

High-resolution image sensor; familiar build and menu; USB 3.0; enhanced stability.

  • -

Poor battery life; limited video features; low ISO performance.

It's not long since conventional photographer wisdom stated that no-one needed more than 12 megapixels. However, after Nikon reignited the megapixel race with the D800 , and with 250-megapixel cameras on the horizon, pixels (along with sensor size) are once again where it's at.

With a huge pixel count – find out how Canon’s new 50-megapixel DSLRs shape up in our Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R review. Canon made headlines earlier this year when it introduced two new 50 million pixel SLR models to its line-up, smashing the previous highest resolution model (the 36 million pixel Nikon...

The image quality of the 5Ds is amazing but it did not came as a surprise. With 50.6 MP on a full frame the pixel density is very similar (actually a little lower) compared to APS-C cameras like the 70D.

    High pixel count, weather sealed

So I have been using the 5DS for months now. And let me say this. i could not be happier. Its mainly geared towards Portraits and landscape photographers. The only way to get the most out this camera is to have great glass.

Works well with my wildlife photography. I use it with a Canon 600mm lens and am getting great results for sharpness. I still have and use my Canon 7D and the 5DS is leaps and bounds above the Canon 7D.
