The Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar T* ZE Lens is the first available Carl Zeiss lens built specifically for the Canon EOS mount. Prior to the ZE lenses, Zeiss lenses required a special adapter to be used on Canon EOS bodies.
Right away, before I purchased this lens, I went ahead and rented it together with the new 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss Milvus version for comparison. The Milvus is considered to be the technically superior lens.
I have been a working professional photographer for fifteen years. I own several other zeiss lenses and I have loved them all. No so with this one. My first complaint is that it does not focus close at all. I'm not talking about macro, I mean regular objects on a table, food, flowers, even people.
this lens is superb Sharp stopped Down to 5.6 that seams to be the sweetspot for Zaiss branded lenses they are made by COSINA in japan not Germany at 1.4 it so soft that it is useless for me must be stoped Down that is a big disapointmentfor user that wish to use it on 1.4 no i wil not recomend it...
This is a great lens for the price. The colors that are produced and the overall picture quality is just simply amazing. I switched from shooting autofocus L series lenses and I have not regretted it.
This is my fifth Zeiss ZE lens. My set includes the 18, 25, 35, 50 and now the 85. All are used via a Metabones adapter on a Sony FS100, and sometimes on my NEX-7 and 5DII.I prefer Zeiss lenses over their Canon L equivalents because they are solid, sharp all the way, and have solid, firm focus...
I use a 1DX and wanted this for a portrait lens. I think 85mm is great for what I wanted and since I have bought and sold the Canon 1.2 twice so far, and since I love Zeiss, I wanted to try this one. I love the images. In my opinion, it is not a great lens to hand hold at SS slower than 1/100.
I'm a working pro. I've owned and used this lens for about 2 years now, so I feel my opinion is in pretty good authority to speak about it. This is the only review I have ever left so I hope it sincerely helps somebody make an informed purchase. It comes down to auto focus.
I bought this lens a few weeks ago and had tried it for both portrait and landscape photograph. For portrait, it's razor sharp and the color renderation is wonderful. The models were very happy with the final photos. For landscape, it gives 3D look on the photo.
This quality of the image that this lens produces is amazing. Color reproduction is natural and cinematic and out of focus subjects (bokeh) is very natural as well. Corners stay sharp and overall sharpness is excellent.
