The A-S501 is a pretty good amplifier, but it’s up against some extremely formidable opposition that it can’t match

Lacks the composure and excitement of the best
Was looking for a good quality Integrated Amp and found the Yamaha A-S501 as a S&D for a good price point and thought I would give it a try. Sound quality is outstanding. I have an older Sony ES Receiver rated at 120 WPC and the Yamaha sounds more natural.

Could use a light on volume knob.
This is a replacement for an old 85 watt per channel Yamaha (AX-490) amp. Provides good clean power. The DAC and subwoofer out are great features. The level of the volume dial is impossible to see from any distance, should have a small LED or some other visual marking.

great amp! sounds amazing!
This amp is about solid construction, big power, and no frills. The built in high resolution DAC is a nice addition. The sound is the cleanest and clearest I've ever had. The detail is immense. There is no lying in this amp.

All nit-picks:Burn-in period can misleadPlastic knobsNo MC phono input (would need to use MM or high-output MC cartridge)Remote does not adjust equalizer or A/B speaker selection, only PureDirect mode, power, input, and volume
I had been listening to music through a nice Yamaha, AV home theater receiver using in-wall speakers and a high end infinity center channel and subwoofer. But, for music, I typically used a "stereo" setting and the sub.
