Startup lens manufacturers face a rather difficult business environment these days. The market is not only crowded but it's also shrinking. Competing on the same grounds with the more established players is a hopeless or at least tiresome task.
Laowa are one of a few manufacturers who are producing very interesting and innovative niche lenses. The Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus lens is one of a handful of optics that utilize an apodization element.
If and when you manage to get those “keeper shots” you’ll be rewarded with an amazing image overall. I genuinely digg this lens, and the more advanced photographer will absolutely adore it.
The Laowa 105mm f/2 (T3.2) STF lens is an exceptionally well made and durable lens. It’s heavy, it’s solid and it feels lovely in the hand. When shooting with the sweet spot of the lens which is f/4, image quality is top drawer. It is possible to get really sharp images.
Testing the Venus Optics LAOWA STF 105 mm f/2 (T3.2) was a real pleasure for me. Not only it is able to generate exceptionally sharp images but also it provides an additional function, allowing you to play with out-of-focus blur in a creative way.

It's nicknamed the 'Bokeh Dreamer', but is this Laowa lens worth purchasing for portraiture? Michael Topham puts this unique lens to the test
The Laowa 105mm f/2 (T3.2) STF is a niche lens that won’t appeal to everyone. The fact that it’s manual focus only lends it to subjects that are static, and with those that move unpredictably it’s unlikely you’ll find focus fast enough using this lens.
Laowa certainly knows how to make exciting and different lenses. It's always good to see lenses that go beyond the pure technicalities, offering some unique “feel” or “character” to images.
This is a great lens for some portraits. I do a little side gig and help out some lower income kids with their senior portraits. When I was a kid I couldn't afford things like that so this lens is fantastic when I do portraits for these kids out here. Great review!

Not too much
The images created by this lens are tack sharp. The bokeh is extremely pleasing when comparing to other portrait lenses I owned. The dual aperture ring is also a bonus for videographer as well. Definitely recommend this little gem to my friends.
King of bokeh, you can buy all the expensive lens out there but the Laowa 105mm f/2 STF by Venus Optics beats the competitions hands down. This lens is constructed with performance in mind. You set the focus, aperture and the STF manually in fact, this can double as a cine lens.
