By Jo Plumridge No lens is perfect, but the Tamron lens does offer a lot for its price tag. It's a good all-purpose lens which will suit camera users without a massive budget ... and its autofocus takes some beating! The lens is made of plastic, with a metal mount and rubberized zoom control.
This lens is one of my all time favorites. It's fairly light, tack sharp, and has a decent zoom range. The main problem is with mountaineering you tend to want either wide angle or telephoto, which this lens is neither. So, you end up taking multiple lenses with you on a trip.
I have both this Tamron lens + my wife insisted on buying latest and greatest Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. I tested both lenses and my not very professional conclusion is: 1) their sharpness is absolutely the same except 2.8 where Canon is a bit better 2) Tamron is lighter and more compact...
I used this lens on several photo shoots before finding out that it wasn't in focus. I finally did some test shots and confirmed that it doesnt focus properly, or is just very soft. I managed to save enough of the photos to not have to reshoot the photos...luckily it wasn't a wedding.
I really really wanted this lens to work for me because its affordable but unfortunately it didn't. Don't get me wrong, I love the constant 2.8 but it can only focus in bright sunlight. Indoors, in relatively 'normal' lighting, it just can't focus.
This is an great all around use lense. The things I like most about it is that it is very sharp and focuses fast. It is plenty wide enough on a full frame camera. I don't see a need for VC on the D700 considering it shoots at high ISOs with no noise.
