Overalll, this lens has now proved itself to be a worthy contender for ultra-wideangle shooting use and a deserved winner of our Recommended award.

The SP AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) is Tamron's second attempt at a wide angle zoom for DX cameras, and it certainly looks as though this time the company has come up with a more compelling product than its older 11-18mm.

  • +

Equal widest angle in its class, and largest zoom range (by a whisker), Low distortion, Generally good resistance to flare

  • -

Soft wide open (low local contrast), Soft corners at all focal lengths and apertures, Wide diameter lens hood takes up lots of space in a bag

Tamron introduced the first super, super zoom, so it was no surprise that they would stretch the limits of the ultra wide-angle zoom, not only that but they've now introduced their second version.

  • +

Lighter weight, Wide zoom range, Price

  • -

Noisy zoom (possibly just our review model), Small amount of chromatic aberration at the extremes of the frame, Slightly soft when shooting into the sun.

By Jo Plumridge Considering the price, it's perhaps not surprising that this Tamron lens has a plastic body. However, it does have a metal mount. Because it's quite a compact lens, it doesn't actually feel that fragile, instead feeling sturdy and well-built.

Just got this lens and only played around with it for a few minutes, but so far I have to say this lens is great! Bought used and quality was terrific. Picture quality seems great so far. Planning to use for real estate and landscape photography.

The question is whether saving $300 (at the time of this writing, which is February 2014) is worth the slight softening at the edges. The Nikkor is much better and you can see the difference in a comparison. But this lens is pretty good and you may not notice the difference.

  • +

    • Low cost, relative to Nikkor lenses • Auto focus • Feels like it has a good construction

  • -

    • Slight softening at the edges compared to the Nikkor 10-24mm

This is a significant improvement over a 17 mm and it is clear, even at the edges. It is smooth and easy to use, reasonably fast.

  • +

Compact Design, Easy To Use, Improves Picture Quality
