The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens features a popular and useful focal length range, a nice design, USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) AF and VC (Vibration Compensation) for a very affordable price .

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Tamron's first lens to include both an Ultrasonic focusing motor and Vibration Compensation.

  • +

Very good optical performance, Good build quality, Ultrasonic drive, Effective vibration compensation system

  • -

Focusing a little slower than other silent focusing systems I've used.

Tamron has seemed to pay attention to what other manufacturers are offering and has created a new design for this lens. Instead of a lens which offered dual roles as a telephoto zoom lens and a capable macro lens, Tamron has chosen to emphasize the former at the expense of the latter, and has...

Tailor-made for wildlife and sports shooters, this third-generation 70–300mm full-frame telezoom in Tamron’s SP line adds Vibration Compensation (VC) plus two innovations: an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) focusing motor for near-silent AF, and an element of what Tamron calls XLD glass, a relatively...

The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SP DI VC USD features both Low Dispersion (LD) and Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) lens elements to help correct chromatic aberration and is also fitted with an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) motor, as well as Tamron’s Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism to reduce the effects...

Unlike the somewhat basic affair that is the Tamron AF 70-300mm Macro , the new Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD has all the latest bells and whistles, or at least their high-tech, optical equivalents.

The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SP Di VC USD is a very welcome new option in the tele zoom lens class. The lens is capable of delivering a very good to excellent center quality combined with good to very good borders/corners. Lateral CAs are low and not objectionable from a field perspective.

The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD performed fairly well in our full format test but it is a more desirable lens on an APS-C DSLR. The resolution figures are very high in the scope and that's, at least mostly, across the image frame.

The summary of this test can have only a positive overtone. The Tamron SP 70–300 mm f/4–5.6 Di VC USD is a very well-done device with only one major flaw which we can point out - the chromatic aberration. It really could have been at least momentarily lower.

  • +

huge and solid barrel,, very good image resolution in the frame centre,, good or decent image quality on the edge of the frame,, low distortion,, slight coma,, well-corrected astigmatism,, imperceptible vignetting on APS-C/DX,, silent and efficient autofocus.

  • -

significant chromatic aberration in the whole focal lengths range,, image resolution at 300 mm could have been at least a bit better.

Tamron's SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD lens was released in time for the company's 60th anniversary. The ‘SP' label denotes ‘professional' build quality, while other welcome additions include an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) AF drive motor and Vibration Compensation (VC) stabilisation plus Full Time...

Due to budget considerations I elected to go with the Tamron 70-300mm, w/ AF and VR, and the $100.00 rebate expecting it to be inferior to the Nikon equivalent.Boy was I pleasanly surprised! The Tamron far exceeds my wildest expectations.

i mount this lens on my a6500 using metabones speedbooster Ultra II fifth edition... its amazing .. at 70mm 2.8 and becomes more sharper... even at 300mm f4 its very sharp.. AF and VC is working on the speedbooster... very stable .. VC + IS of sony..amazing ..on 300mm its very stable ..

A surprising good lens, did read many reviews in order to choose between nikon 70-300 and this one , in the end the Tamron was best in most of the reviews. So bought one. (nikon was $ 713 that's $ 300 more !

  • +

Sharp, light, accurate autofocus , inexpensive

  • -

    noise, distortion

27 January 2014

It makes some noise while focusing. But the optics and image quality are excellent. Also works as a good portrait lens.

I will not pretend to be an expert, but do own several Nikon cameras and lens. The Tamron SP 70-300mm anniversary edition is one, if not the best lens in my bag. Sharp, Great colors, great bokeh and fast focus, make it a joy to use.

  • +

Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh

A great lens at this price. I used it for several purposes especially wildlife photography. It is worth the money you pay. If you want a good telephoto lens in a budget, this is the best. The lens is overall good but it struggles in low light.

I absolutely love this lens. I became a Tamron fan after buying this lens. A fantastic piece of optics. A few points to be mentioned here. This is a very good portrait lens. Although that is not its primary use. The sharpness is commendable.

everything is good , excellent build quality but picture quality is not upto the mark as per price..

11 August 2017

The lens absolutely looks beautiful. The images created are so great, I don't even care that it's not f/2.8!!! The VC is BEST IN CLASS- and I have no complaints other than that this is a great overall lens! Totally worth the money! (It also doubles as a telescope sometimes)

4 August 2017

I really took a long time to purchase this lens. It was a mixed feelings on going for a third party lens for my Nikon D3100. The reviews of this lens and that of Nikon helped me on concentrating mainly on the VC of Tamron against the VR of Nikon, the price of Nikon 70-300mm VR 4.5 -5.6 vs the price...
