The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro lens also lacks internal focusing, so the front element extends and rotates during focusing.

  • +

Only a third of the price of some budget telephoto zooms, Decent optical performance at the short end of the zoom range, Quite light in weight for a full-frame lens

  • -

Lacks Tamron's Vibration Correction stabiliser, Poor sharpness in the 250-300mm zoom range, Basic autofocus system is very sluggish

This is a very usable lens if you can live without IS (eg. if you’ll be using it on a tripod), users on a tight budget and those who will make use of its close-focusing (though not true macro) capability.

  • +

    Close-up facility

  • -

    No image stabilisation

Lens guru, Gary Wolstenholme tests the Tamron 70-300mm zoom lens. Is it worth the relaively low price or should it be relegated to the bargain bin? Often after purchasing a camera complete with standard kit lens, many will look for a telephoto zoom to extend their reach when photographing distant...

  • +

Lightweight, Resolution at shorter focal lengths, Macro feature, Good value for money, Good resistance to ghosting and flare

  • -

Slow autofocus, Rotating front element may make it difficult to use a polariser

This lens works much better than I expected and is also more stoutly constructed than I thought it would be. The manual focus and zoom work smoothly and well and though it takes a little getting used to the macro setting is very useful.

  • +

Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight, Strong Construction

  • -

    Noise, Slow Focus

I purchased this as a gift. This is a pretty good entry level tele zoom. Low light performance suffers without a monopod or tripod, and the af is slow sometimes, especially in low light, but pre-focus manually first, not a problem getting sharp images.

  • +

    Very sharp even wide open.

  • -

    No IS. Plastic mount.

The vibration control is excellent. I have been able to capture whisker sharp hand held pictures of animals at 300mm (450mm equivalent for my camera) from as far away as 50 yards. It also has been great for macro type photography.

This lens came with a 6 year warranty link right on the box. It works just like a new one at a fraction of the price. I have waited for years to upgrade from a 18-200mm to this 70-300mm lens, because the cost had been as much as my DSLR. I took my first photos of Mt.

Originally I bought this lens as a replacement for a previous telephoto lens that I had owned (also a Tamron) and honestly I was surprised with the quality of the 70-300 Di LD lens since I had thought that this was going to be only a slight upgrade compared to my previous one.

*using it on a Nikon (D40) Summed most of it up in the pros and cons. I love it, and yeah, any beginners I'm sure would be fine except the note I put below (regarding VR) but I think most people should be fine.

Zoom. The 300mm get's right in your face every time! Highly recommend it if tossing up between a 200mm and a 300mm, Simplicity (I looked at many reviews before purchasing this lens and alot of people complained of difficulty in using it, but I found this to be extremely easy, other than the macro...

Can be a bit soft on the macro. Only noticeable if blown up, but yeah, can be a bit., The AF. I know it is often mentioned, but it really is quite laggy. I don't mind and often will do a whole shoot on MF, you just have to be prepared to at times.
