Outstanding optical performance is spoiled slightly by some increase in fringing at the wide end, but generally this is a very capable and handy optic, with a decent price, especially for Nikon, Canon and Sony users. Overall, it’s a very good option

The new Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) joins a growing community of wide-zoom lenses. In contrast to an earlier version of this lens, which is available in several mounts, this APS-C Tamron optic (designated Model B005/$649 street price) is only available in Nikon DX (with...

Putting aside such glaring issues as build quality, noisy and slow AF, Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD ASPH IF is capable of producing pretty good results. Unfortunately, the performance is rather inconsistent across the zoom and aperture ranges.

With the exception of the distortion at the wide end, this is a very competent lens and a considerable jump up from the general standard of kit lens that it would replace. There is little else that lets it down and good resolution across the frame that is acceptable even when the lens is used wide...

  • +

Good resolution and control of CA, Nice build, an improvement for Tamron, Consistent through the focal range

  • -

Distortion at the wide end., No supplied case or pouch.

A hood (petal style) which mounts on the lens using a bayonet fitting is supplied with the lens. The front of the lens is threaded for 72mm diameter filters and the lens cap is a "center squeeze" design which makes it easier to remove and replace with the lens hood mounted.

DSLR photographers looking to move up from the distortion and limited sharpness and speed of their kit lens will welcome this new wide-to-medium tele. Tamron has toted out big-gun technology for its 26-78mm equivalent ($450, street).

This was a replacement for the kit lens that came with my Nikon D500 and I have been very happy with it. Pictures come out exceptionally clear. It covers a useful range of focal lengths. The large diameter allows plenty of light in.

  • +

Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Good in low light, Strong Construction, Versatile

Very good lens for this value. Sometimes is needing to be careful with the autofocus. Didn't have an IS, but with this lens I don't need it. Finaly I recomend it.

This is my main all around lens, Works great for landscape, portraits, close ups, and for general use. I Sold my kit lens and bought this one and I no regrets.

  • +

Very Sharp, That's all I can say!

  • -

A lil bit slow AF but I love doing manual focus anyway. So not a big deal.

When I first started searching for a wide angle multipurpose zoom lens, I shortlisted Canon 18-200mm IS, Canon 18-55mm IS, Canon 17-50mm F2.8 USM, Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 & Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. I read various expert reviews, user reviews and lens comparisons on the internet.

  • +

Sharp photos in good light conditions, excellent wide angle outdoor shots

  • -

At f2.8 / 17mm photos are not sharp, difficult to focus in low light conditions

I’ve had this lens since X’mas 2006. Because of the large aperture, I was able to photograph my toddler kids indoor without flash – something that I struggled much more previously with my Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. Having mentioned that, I do miss the IS capability.

  • +

f/2.8, light weight, shape, fast focus, 17mm on wide end

  • -

Blue fringing, zoom ring rotates opposite to Canon’s, ends at 50mm
