Overall, the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens was a pleasure to use. I did need to adjust my shooting habits to handle this large optic, and my camera/lens/tripod adapter combo was not light of weight or short in size, but once I got past that I found that it lent itself to exploring new...

The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens adds a very interesting choice to the mid-to-long telephoto zoom lens options list. This lens (and its Sigma counterpart) delivers image quality close to that of the major camera brands' own offerings at a substantially lower price point.

Tamron’s updated G2 (Generation 2) lenses have been enjoying the limelight recently, but this first edition 100-400mm is equally impressive. It packs a real performance punch into a tough but lightweight build, and at a relatively lightweight price.

Light enough for handheld shooting, Fantastic build quality, Speedy autofocus

Sharpness drops off in the corners

Like the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 HSM DG OS Contemporary lens that came before it, the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD proves a compelling option for photographers keen on nature and wildlife photography looking for a budget 400mm lens.

Lenses for full frame cameras in the range of around 100-400mm hit an extremely useful point in the focal length range. Birding, general wildlife, sports and portraiture all cry out for these lenses so an alternative to the generally expensive marque optics is always welcome.

: I think I’d choose this camera for the resolution and because, for a traveling landscape photographer who won’t need great autofocusing, this lens could work well.

For greater protection when shooting outdoors, leak-proof seals throughout the lens barrel help protect your equipment.

I’m pretty intrigued by the Tamron 100-400mm f4.5-6.3 Di VC USD. It will be a nice travel lens, though at the same time when I look at it and think about it, I wonder if doing this for DSLRs was a winning strategy.

This first-edition 100-400mm performs well straight out of the blocks, packing real punch into a refreshingly lightweight build, and when it comes to outright image quality, the Tamron puts plenty of bigger, more expensive lenses in the shade. It’s a steal at the price.

Useful super-telephoto reach, Relatively compact and lightweight, Well built with good performance
-
-
Shorter reach than most super-tele zooms, Typically ‘slow’ aperture rating, Tripod mount ring not included

The 100-400mm zoom range is ideal for sports and wildlife photography and the comparatively light weight of this lens and its 4-stop stabilisation make hand-held shooting possible, although a lens of this type usually fares better when tripod-mounted.

Many have commented on this lens as good but short of excellent at 400mm wide open. I found this lens to be excellent, with great EQ even at 400mm wide open. Once I fine tuned the focus with the Tap-in console, it produced images on a par with my Nikkor 200-500mm, at a fraction of the weight and...

This lens is absolutely amazing. Sharp, sharp, sharp! I bought it as an alternative to my Nikon 200-500 when I want to travel light. Fits the bill perfectly, and the IQ is as good as the Nikon. Out of the box, the focus on my D850 was slightly off, but I fine tuned it to +4, and it's just right.

Well designed tele-photo lens, was undecided between this lens and the equivalent Sigma 100-400 mm lens. Both were very sharp, approx. the same weight but the deciding factor for me was the ability of the Tamron lens to accept the optional tripod mount.

I was just shocked, in a good way, how sharp this lens is! It is sharper than any of mt Nikon FX and DX variable aperture zoom lenses. Compared to these zooms there is very little focus breathing and the VR is excellent. The lens is quite compact for this zoom range and has good ergonomics.

I am an aspiring bird photographer. A long time film and then point and shoot photographer, I resolved to get serious about birds a year ago and purchased a Nikon 7200 and two kit lenses. I struggled with one of them a 55-300 trying to shoot birds.

So I bought this lens and enjoyed using it on my D810. There were issues with corner sharpness, especially between 300-400mm. I\'d have to push to f/11 to bring the corners up. Unfortunately shooting at f/11 means you either shoot with a slower shutter speed or higher ISO.

Relatively sharp throughout the range in the center. Weather sealed. Build quality seems fine.
-
-
Slow max aperture at 300-400mm. Compatibility issues. Corner sharpness wide open leaves a lot to be desired.

I have had this lens for a month or two now and love it. I have it attached to my Nikon 750 and am pleased with the results I have been getting from it

Durable, Great Picture Quality, Lightweight, Simple Controls

I had the Sigma 150-600 before i got this one. Although i miss the extra reach with the Tamron, it is so much easier to use. I actually keep it on my 6D for most of the time since the 100mm gives me true @100mm FF, which is close enough on the short end.
