Overall, the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens was a pleasure to use. I did need to adjust my shooting habits to handle this large optic, and my camera/lens/tripod adapter combo was not light of weight or short in size, but once I got past that I found that it lent itself to exploring new...
Lenses for full frame cameras in the range of around 100-400mm hit an extremely useful point in the focal length range. Birding, general wildlife, sports and portraiture all cry out for these lenses so an alternative to the generally expensive marque optics is always welcome.
For greater protection when shooting outdoors, leak-proof seals throughout the lens barrel help protect your equipment.
This first-edition 100-400mm performs well straight out of the blocks, packing real punch into a refreshingly lightweight build, and when it comes to outright image quality, the Tamron puts plenty of bigger, more expensive lenses in the shade. It’s a steal at the price.

Useful super-telephoto reach, Relatively compact and lightweight, Well built with good performance
-
-
Shorter reach than most super-tele zooms, Typically ‘slow’ aperture rating, Tripod mount ring not included
The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is a telephoto zoom lens that’s available in Canon or Nikon mount. It’s fully compatible with both APS-C and full-frame DSLRs. Generally speaking, we expect long telephoto zooms to be large and cumbersome.

Fast and quiet autofocus performance, Convenient size and weight for a lens of its pedigree, Effective Vibration Compensation (VC) system, Moisture-resistant construction

Tripod collar adds £109 to cost of lens, Produces heavy vignetting used with full-frame DSLRs, More expensive than its closest Sigma rival, Lens hood isn't complimentary to pull zooming
The Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is an excellent alternative to the equivalent lenses from Canon (EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM) and Nikon (Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR), offering 90% of the performance at 50% of the price.
I am not a pro - just an enthusiast. Which actually makes me & likely you - the exact target of this lens. I am shooting this lens on a canon 77D.+ Images can be outstanding when I nail the focus.
In photographing birds, I was initially very disappointed with the sharpness of photos, especially after I'd read the glowing reviews. So I did some tripod focus testing at 300mm vs. my Canon L 70-300mm lens. Sure enough, the Tamron lens was consistently blurred when compared with my existing lens.
All the reviews I read about it before buying were true. Great price for a very good lens,
This is a great lens especially for the price. I was able to reach out and get some great school track meet action shots with my Cannon 6D. No complaints.
I purchased this lens after thinking if I should purchase the Canon 100-400mm. After some serious thought I decided to go with the Taron. Originally it was the price that helped me decide. After my first use of the lens I knew that I had something special.
For the price this lens is working out perfectly for me. I am not a professional photographer but do enjoy quality images. There is some vignetting but that can be remedied with aperture adjustment. It's a great daylight lens since its a little slow and the build quality seems quite good.
I own another Tamron lens and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. I am not disappointed with the quality of this lens. It yields crystal clear full zoom images.
I sold my aging Canon L 100-400 and replaced it with the new Tamron 100-400. I am 100% satisfied
