The unit seems to function well enough, I'll know more after a few months of use. It was relatively easy to set up but fortunately I saw instructions online before I ever set up the drive. The provided instructions from StarTech is very poor.

Looks good and works very well. Love Startech products.

A bit hard to set up in RAID mode (had to repeat the procedure several times to get it to work), but once it works, it is perfect. Maybe a little cons is the blue light: very bright.
Install is one screw and drop in drives. Plenty of rubber on drives and on feet to keep vibration very minimal, but fan and drive noise are still fairly loud. +1 on power supply not being an outlet brick. Unit does not sleep or power down.
Drives went in with no trouble and set up for Raid 1. Still in the testing phase, but everything seems A OK. Could use better instructions on what the status lights are showing.
Unit works well with two 4TB drives installed, but ONLY when connected to a computer. Unit is not seen when connected to the USB2 port on either my Oppo model 103 Bluray player or my LG model BD-660 Bluray player. So, a complete waste of money for me.
Yes, the price seems affordable, but you get what you pay for applies here. My unit, after one year of light usage, has a broken fan, which causes the RAID to stop functioning, which causes Windows Explorer to crash, its just not good. I in NO WAY have any long-term confidence in this unit.
If it doesn't turn on in a week or so I will RMA it or something.

It ran for about an hour....then it died.

When I hit the power button it just flicks on and then off. I am not sure what the issue is. I've changed wall plugs 3 times already and it has not made a difference. Makes me sad as I really wanted to reuse these two hard drives I wasn't using.
I liked that it only took one screw to install both drives. reassuringly solid metal housing with a plastic front. Set it up for mirroring and it required reformatting the drives, though they had been set up to mirror previously in a LaCie box. Wakes up faster than my 5-year-old LaCie box.
I am using this simply as occasional redundant backup for my media drive (pictures, music, etc...) so it does not get heavy use. Eventually I will get a matching drive to store my movies are utilize this in redundant RAID to play all my media so it will get much heavier use.

I cannot comment on the RAID functionality yet as I have yet to utilize it in that manner, however standard functionality works well on eSATA with two different HDDs. I like the purpleish activity flash as opposed to the generic red.Or maybe it just appears purple because the blue never goes out.

Lights are a bit bright, but that is pretty much the way of every computer device these days. Bright and blue. The foam on the inside used to stabilize the drives leaves a tiny bit of wiggle room, but it sits on top of my HTPC at all times so that isn't much of an issue.
Turns out that the Vantec NexStar MX enclosure uses the same JMicron chipset. If you navigate to their site and download their driver file jmb39x_raid_ap1.zip, you can configure the Star Tech enclosure in any configuration without regard to the config switch setting.

Nicely constructed box, one screw installation for both drives. Fan is reasonably quiet, and case runs cool to the touch

I could not get the box to configure as a RAID 1 system using two new WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB drives, no matter how many times I tried the setup instructions. Window 7 64 bit Ultimate insisted on calling it a RAID 0 setup when connected over USB 3.0.
