The first Sony Alpha 77 – or Mark I if you will – posed a serious threat to the APS-C DSLR duopoly of Canon and Nikon with its impressive specification and performance, thus making the three-year wait for a replacement frustrating for many Sony fans.

  • +

Rapid AF system; Fast burst mode; Impressive burst depth; Weather sealing

  • -

Image quality suffers a touch at higher ISO settings

The Sony a77 II is the perfect choice for those seeking pro-grade shooting and AF speeds for well-under pro-grade prices. No moving mirror means the a77 II can successfully use continuous AF during both 12fps bursts and video capture, a major advantage over many of its DSLR competitors.

  • +

12 fps burst with AF-C is useful for fast action, Continuous AF is effective during still and video capture, Face detection works well, Good build quality and overall ergonomics, SteadyShot is useful in both still and video capture, Ability to record video using XAVC S codec, Fully articulating LCD

  • -

Lock-on AF functionality is hit or miss, Noisy high ISO images, Heavy noise reduction in JPEG, 12 fps mode offers little to no control over shutter speed and aperture, Only 15 cross-type AF points, limited to a central portion of the frame, No way to quickly check focus in image review, since only...

The Sony Alpha 77 II has one of the quickest autofocus systems we've seen on an SLR and can shoot at 12fps, making it our Editors' Choice.

  • +

Excellent high ISO image quality. 12fps continuous shooting. Fast, 79-point autofocus system. In-body stabilization. Sharp OLED EVF. Excellent control layout. Sharp, articulated rear LCD. Seamless Live View experience. Built-in Wi-Fi. PC sync flash socket. 1080p60 video recording.

  • -

A little slow to start and shoot. Single memory card slot. No built-in GPS. Some photographers prefer an optical viewfinder.

The Sony A77 II provides an upgrade pretty much across the board compared to the original "Mark I" model, especially with regards to the sensor, image processor and autofocus system. Other tweaks and improvements include an improved EVF, higher-res multi-angled rear LCD and built-in Wi-Fi & NFC.

  • +

Excellent image quality at low ISOs, noticeably improved over its predecessor, Improved high ISO performance as well (in RAW images), Very good dynamic range, Very fast single-shot autofocus, Able to autofocus in very low light, Built-in image stabilization, Very fast burst mode (up to 12 fps with...

  • -

Heavy-handed default JPEG noise reduction at higher ISOs, Lackluster continuous AF performance with moving subjects, Limitations w/ 12fps burst mode: no aperture control with C-AF; no shutter speed control, Below average battery life compared to traditional DSLRs with optical viewfinder, Auto white...

All in all, Sony's Alpha 77 M2 is a great camera that performs well in everyday situations. A large ISO range also makes it ideal for extreme low-light photography, while the translucent mirror system enables decent autofocus while you're shooting video.

  • +

Tilt-and-swivel LCD; Evenly exposed pictures with accurate color and sharp detail; Wide ISO range for low-light photography; Continuous shooting of 12 fps for up to 25 photos

  • -

Eye sensor too sensitive ; Overly aggressive noise reduction at high ISOs ; Poor smartphone Wi-Fi connectivity

It is difficult to evaluate the Sony designs Sony SLT-A77 II because there is nothing else like it available on the industry. While there are 'premium' super zoom digital cameras out there, such as the Olympus Stylus pen 1, the RX10's 1" indicator combined with a continuous F2.8 24-200mm lens places...

Since purchasing this camera three weeks ago I have used it to take in excess of a thousand photographs, not counting an overnight timelapse video. The photography has included long exposure work, event photography for clients, and some personal projects. So far the camera has worked flawlessly.

I bought the sony in order to replace my canon 60d. I was satisfied with my canon, but this model was not fast enough in HD quality. The sony is a lot faster and i can take multiple shots without waiting for the camera to process the image, as long as you have the right SD card.

It has so many features and options I was at first overwhelmed. For others like myself who have not previously used a camera in this class, I recommend "The Complete Guide to Sony's Alpha 77 II" by Gary L. Friedman. It's much more detailed than the little owner's manual that comes with the camera.

Love it very easy to use, and is worth every penny. I love taking photos of my dogs swimming, playing or just laying around. This camera suits my needs. I have tried other brands, but the action shot photos would always come out blurry, Not with the sony

This was scary. 3 weeks old. Loved it. Took great pictures. Had a Lexar 64GB (Professional) SDXC card. Had over 2,000 images. This Sunday went to a music festival and took 989 pictures -- some of them of my 14 year old daughter signing. Came out great.

I've owned Sony A77M2 for half year now. I have to say that I did a lot of research prior to make my decision and I was having on my mind Nikon D7100 and Canon 70D until I've seen this one... And I have to say I'm definitely satisfied with it's performance so far.

Bought my A77II with the VG for $900, could not resist! Free shipping and no sales tax sealed the deal. Did not want to upgrade from my original A77 but now I am glad I did!! The increased focusing speed and being able to customize most of the buttons, more then make up for the loss of GPS and the...
