I enjoyed reading your article about the FS5, a camera I recently purchased, but since I am new at video I went with the kit lens. You mentioned that it was not a very good lens, but did not list a lens you would prefer.
I'd been using Canon DSLRs for video for about 4 years and decided to step up to a mirrorless camera about two months ago. After countless hours of research and watching reviews, I went for the FS5 over the a7s series because of the features and benefits of using a dedicated video camera.
Love this camera, it's a hell of a work horse. Sure there are a few wierd things like the sgamut settings but that's really my only complaint. When you pair this with a RAW recorder, the image rivals quality of an older RED epic x.
Sony shouldve put the 2 Xlr connectors on the body like the FS7. No option for true stereo without keeping the handle on at all times because of the Xlr on the handle. Ive tried updating the firmware following the steps they give on my iMac (2013) & MacBook Pro (2015)...
Excellent ergonomics, great slow-motion, love that it has SDI out. MXF files are a little annoying because you can't preview them on a mac without loading your footage into an editing program.
Pros: - Fits soooo nicely in your hand, really a run and gun. Great for anyone on the go who has to get a shot quickly and right the first time. - 1080 @60fps is beautiful, focus even with adapter is amazing. - Adapts pretty much any lens.
Out of all the research that I put in and my tests with this camera before buying all lead to how this is a great camera. I used this for several years now and bought my second one of these.
After shooting on DSLR for over 6 years I was finally ready to buy a professional camcorder. This was the best decision I've ever made. No more crazy looking dslr cages with articulating arms going every which way holding a monitor, zoom recorder and lav receiver. It was getting ridiculous!
To start things off, I would like to say the FS5 is an amazing camera. Here are some of the features I love:First things first, this camera can shoot 4k up to 30fps internally at 8bit 4:2:0.
I purposefully waited for a while to write this review. I did want to be as honest and candid ad I could seeing how this isn't a cheap thing to purchase, and like a lot of people I rely on a fair amount of other's to tell me about a product before I purchase it.
We use this camera for a run and gun digital web series, has a great picture and can take the beating we give the camera in day-to-day use.
