Sony’s soundbar offers an easy way to get Atmos, but you’ll need the optional wireless surround speakers for best performance.
Atmos and DTS:X sound from a compact package, Easy setup
Limited overhead effects capability, Performance with music less impressive than movies
Amazing picture quality can be undercut by mediocre sound. Most HDTVs are built with a focus on providing a crisp image, leaving sound almost entirely overlooked. And it would be fair to say the speakers that come built-in on televisions are proportionally equivalent to the speakers on your...
The compact Sony HT-ZF9 is the Penn and Teller of Dolby Atmos soundbars. It’s ability to create an expanded soundstage from just three drivers and a subwoofer is sonic magic.
Supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, Vertical S up-mixer, Up-mixes regular surround sound
Decent low end performance, Operationally confusing, Disappointing overhead sound
Great sound, much better than any other I have heard.
Great sound on all programs
Great soundbar supports all the audio codecs such as Dolby Atmos and DTS X but the so called over head effects is a gimmick I also had the rear speakers which is a must and I never felt as if sound was coming from above
I have to say this has been one of the worst purchases I have made. Months ago I stopped looking at other soundbars from Samsung, LG, etc. because I read that Sony was coming out with this one that had everything I was looking for: wireless sub-woofer, wireless rear speakers, Atmos, DTS;X. Bad move.
EDIT2 (30 Jun 2018): REAR level turned down to 6. Switched my preferred sound mode to STANDARD, it seems to be the mode that least tampers with outgoing sound. Trying the other modes I found that CINEMA created more of an echo and some lost vocal clarity.
The sound quality is tremendous. Things like rain or flowing water are reproduced very well and the bass is clear without being overbearing. Not sold on the overhead reproduction but everything else is so crisp (especially stuff that goes side to side, pretty impressive) that I think is still worth...
