There’s no denying that the RX10 is something of a niche camera, in no small part due to a launch price that is some £600 more expensive than its nearest bridge competitor

  • +

Impressive lens; Complete feature-set; Great images

  • -

    Eye-watering price tag

The RX10 is, most simply, a pimped-up bridge camera. One with a bigger sensor and brighter, higher quality lens than most models, and one that's packed with professional movie features that could see it adopted by video journalists and documentary film makers.

  • +

Very high quality 24-200mm equivalent zoom., Constant f2.8 aperture; good quality even wide open., Comfortable and tough weather-sealed body., Superb large and detailed electronic viewfinder., Fast continuous shooting: 10fps for 2.5 seconds., Powerful movie features with full manual control.

  • -

Slow zoom control, especially when filming., Laborious to manually set AF area., No touch-screen., Can’t control AF while filming., Disappointing Continuous AF., Basic smartphone remote control., No GPS tagging with Sony app., No interval timer., No slow motion video option.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 is a bridge-style camera that gets just about everything right, and its steep asking price reflects its impeccable quality.

  • +

Impressively sharp 24-200mm f/2.8 lens. Big 1-inch image sensor. 10fps burst shooting. Speedy focus. 1080p60 video capture. Excellent customizable control layout. Sharp EVF. Tilting rear LCD. Multi Interface hot shoe. Integrated Wi-Fi with NFC.

  • -

Bulky. Expensive. External battery charger not included.

The Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 offers a great combination of still and video quality, thanks to its one-inch sensor and 24-200 F2.8 lens. Its focus is as much about video as stills, and the RX10 offers more controls in that respect than virtually any other camera.

  • +

Very good photo quality, especially when shooting Raw, Top-notch video quality, Excellent and flexible 24-200mm equiv. F2.8 lens, Solid, weather-sealed body, Many tools for shooting video: focus peaking, zebra pattern, step-less aperture ring, Responsive AF in good light, Fast continuous shooting...

  • -

Pricey, JPEG images are over-sharpened and over-processed, Video bit rates not competitive with best digital cameras, Autofocus can be hesitant, especially in low light; AF improves when assist lamp is turned off, Camera 'locks up' while buffer is clearing after continuous shooting, Manual focus can...

Sony is bringing zoom to the popular sensor of the RX100--but it comes at a cost. Can the RX10 super zoom live up to its price tag?

We began this review with the conundrum every DSLR owner confronts – dealing with myriad lenses and shoulder-breaking gear bags – and whether there is a high-quality, portable solution for these issues. The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 is it and it deserves our Editor’s Choice designation.

It takes a lot to make me take off my headphones on the New York City subway. But one night, standing on the platform, I saw a crowd start to gather on the other side of the tracks.

  • +

Versatile, sharp lens, Solid picture quality, even in low light, Incredibly easy to learn and operate

  • -

Expensive, Bulky, Enough autofocus problems to be worrisome

When Sony announced its RX10 bridge camera last month, the news was met with a mixture of excitement and confusion. Some saw it for what it was, and were absolutely thrilled. Others didn't understand: Weren't the days of thousand-dollar-plus bridge cameras long gone?

  • +

Mostly excellent ergonomics and control layout, Weather-sealed design, Smaller than the typical SLR with kit lens, but with much better optics, Far smaller and more affordable than an SLR or CSC with similar optics, Excellent image quality for its class, Best-in-class high ISO performance, Good...

  • -

Much less portable than RX100 and RX100 II, Expensive compared to other bridge cameras, Slow menu response after burst shooting mars otherwise-good performance, Zoom drive mechanism is a little slower than we'd like, Upper rear dial is hard to turn or even feel with your thumb, Lower rear dial is...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 is a niche camera, but reviewers can't agree on exactly what that niche is. They do agree that the DSC-RX10 is unique and unlike anything else out there, and that it's the best bridge camera, between a compact and a DSLR, on the market.

  • +

Larger sensor than other bridge cameras, Excellent video quality, Premium super-zoom lens

  • -

External battery charger not included, No touch screen, Larger than other compact cameras

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 works quite well, with a quick start-up rate (given all the glass that it needs to move), responsive auto focus (in most illumination conditions), and little wait between images.

I've been a long-time user of a well-known DSLR camera. I'm incredibly impressed with the equally high quality of the RX10 images and the versatility of the camera without having to haul around 20 pounds of additional glass.

  • +

Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Good in Low Light, Great Resolution, Great Zoom, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact

This is the only camera I considered-after considerable research-for a pack light trip to the UK. The website - dpreview - is very positive on it. The Carl Zeiss 20-200 mm lens at 2.8 throughout the range was what originally attracted me. Sony is spot on with their cameras.

  • +

    Fast GlassWide zoom range.

  • -

No AC adapter and external battery charger. I bought one and an extra battery.

The RX10 is a great camera and you can't beat the price for it here, bundled with a variety of accessories. It takes sharp pictures, and I love the Sony colors. It's smaller than a typical DSLR but quite a bit larger than your typical point n shoot.

I bought my a6000 in 2015. I was looking for a light weight camera that could take great pictures. I soon realized that a single charge did not last very long. I could only get about 2 hours from the battery.

WOW! All I can say is WOW. I researched the heck out of nice cameras for travel and decided on the Sony DSC-RX10. Just returning from Europe and the camera was a delight and the photos exceptional. My son-in-law with a SLR with interchangeable lenses and large camera bag was equally impressed.
