Sony's RX100 III is the latest in its enormously popular 'compact-with-a-big-sensor' series. Like the earlier models, the RX100 III is equipped with a 20 Megapixel 1in sensor that has about four times the area of a typical phone or point-and-shoot camera, allowing it to deliver lower noise and...

  • +

Bigger than average 1in sensor in compact body., Useful 24-70mm equivalent range., Bright f1.8-2.8 focal ratio and built-in ND filter., Built-in electronic viewfinder., Vertically tilting screen which angles 180 degrees., Built in Wifi with NFC. Downloadable apps.

  • -

Too many button presses to reposition AF area., Maximum focal length ‘only’ 70mm., Shallow depth of field still a challenge., Average stabilisation., Smartphone app can’t tag GPS co-ordinates., Screen isn’t touch-sensitive., No hotshoe or microphone input., No miniature effect mode for movies.

It’s really simple: If you have the money and are in the market for a great compact digital camera, go ahead and purchase the RX100 III for all the reasons detailed. As an all-around package, there’s really nothing quite like it; it beats out even the similarly priced Canon’s G1 X Mark II, another...

  • +

Excellent compact camera, Beautiful 20.1MP stills, Outstanding XAVC S videos, Breakthrough pop-up EVF

  • -

Expensive, No hot shoe, Limited focal range

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III is an overall great camera that delivers significant improvements over the RX100 II, but not everyone will think it's worth the extra cost.

  • +

A great electronic viewfinder that doesn't increase the size of the svelte Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III is one of the camera's highlights. Plus it offers excellent performance, photo and video quality.

  • -

The camera shuts down when you retract the viewfinder, the autofocus system could be more consistent, and it has poor battery life.

The big question is whether the RX100 III’s extra features are worth a few hundred more dollars than its predecessors, which are now its main competitors. It really depends on your shooting style and your video needs.

  • +

Pound for pound, the best pocket camera available now. Outstanding photo and video quality for its size. The ultimate blend of features for any level of photographer. The only pocket camera with an electronic eye-level viewfinder.

  • -

Costs as much as a DSLR. Tighter zoom range stops short of ultimate portrait territory. A step back in battery life as compared to previous models. Needs a certain storage card to use its best video mode.

It was clear from its heritage that the Sony RX100 III would be an exciting camera, given that both its predecessors earned our Pocket Camera of the Year award, two years running. But that level of success also meant some mighty big shoes to fill.

  • +

Pocket-friendly design; Popup electronic viewfinder; Bright lens across the zoom range; Great performance with very fast autofocus; Very high resolution gives lots of detail in good light; High ISO noise levels much better than most pocket camera rivals; Wi-Fi wireless networking, Only very slightly...

  • -

Feels a little unbalanced without an accessory grip; Not as much telephoto reach as its siblings; Noise processing is heavier-handed than in earlier models; Quite pricey for a fixed-lens camera, Center of gravity is further left, so doesn't feel as comfortable without a grip, Hand grip is an...

The RX100 III is the most capable compact camera we've ever seen. With its built-in viewfinder and consistently fast lens, there's nothing that can provide better image quality in such a small package.

  • +

Large sensor undoubtedly the best in its class, Bright maximum apertures across zoom range gives huge flexibility, High quality, responsive viewfinder, Built-in ND filter helps both video and stills shooting in bright light, Excellent level of control over video (including manual exposure), Pleasant...

  • -

Clickless, slightly laggy control dial can make shooting experience feel disconnected, Focus peaking rather prone to indicating everything as in-focus, JPEG sharpening a little clumsy and interacts oddly with heavy noise reduction, Autofocus can be hesitant, especially in low light; AF improves when...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III compact camera earns Editors' Choice accolades because of its image quality and excellent EVF, even despite its high price.

If you’ve been following MirrorLessons from the beginning, you might remember that we purchased a Sony RX100 II for our holiday in Wales last year. Even back then, we were highly impressed by the way Sony managed to merge high-end technology and compactness into one body.

Third Time's a CharmWhen I reviewed the original RX100 two years ago my closing comment was "The summary judgement for me is that the new Sony RX100 is hands-down the most appealing pocket-sized digital camera yet.

Sierradescents com.34656880

The RX100 seems to promise us, ultimately, a sort of freedom: the freedom to be rid of our bulky DSLRs, and their heavy lenses, yet still reap the same potency of imaging. It's close, I tell you. Very, very close. As a compact camera the RX100-I and II are peerless; the Mark III is even better.

I have found the RX100M3 to be an outstanding travel camera. It fits well into a pocket, tank bag on my motorcycle, backpack, etc. Easy to cary, easy to shoulder, always with me.

Fast Zeiss Lens, good quality photos, excellent feature set

I have carried this camera with me constantly for one year, Other than my scratching the LCD from my sometimes carrying it in less than ideal circumstances, it's held up nicely. When I first got this camera I hated the menus. HATED them.

Amazing camera with a fairly steep learning curve - for a 67 year old. Bought the optional 2 batteries and charger with the kit plus a another memory card. Flash is decent and I love the pop-up viewfinder. Still learning the finer points and no regrets purchasing it.

Forget the Sony manual. Download Photographers Guide to the Sony RX-100 III by Alexander S,. White for $7.99 from Google play etc. Also the control buttons are pretty small on the body but what do you expect from a camera this size.

This camera does great for the things that are most important to me, which includes low light conditions, panorams, interior locations (museums, galleries) and places with limited room. Therefore, the wider angle lense and good light sensitivity are great.

Easy To Use, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, Good in Low Light, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact

This is a terrific camera that can fit into your shirt pocket and it might be the perfect camera for you, so it is worth giving it a shot: a 1" sensor in a pocket sized camera with both an EVF and a tilt screen, good aperture range, and great image quality.I really wanted this camera to work.

I've used the RX100 mk3 for more than 2 years now. It's the camera I have with me in my daybag just in case I come across Something interesting. Tiny size, image quality comparable with a Nikon D300, fast lens, viewfinder (ok it's electronic but I can live with it).

    Great Camera

Camera came with Memory and Case in Combo Package. The case is way too small for camera. Their answer to the problem: "We do not guarantee the compatibility of combo items." I also purchased large memory card for camera that page said was compatible. It didn't fit camera.

I had been looking for a good pocket camera for quite a while. The technology finally allowed this DX100 3 to perform at a level that I don't feel compromised despite its size. I own both Leica and Nikon professional cameras. There are times that I just wanted to put my camera in my pocket.

I really love my Sony NEX6 mirrorless camera, but even if only using a single lens, it isn't the most portable thing in the world.Everywhere I go, I see photos that I'd like to take and I got tired of not having my camera with me.I needed something that would fit in my pocket, I could carry with me...
