The Alpha 7 II continues to push Sony's full frame mirrorless line of cameras into ground-breaking territory. It is the only full frame mirrorless camera to offer in-body image stabilization systems and its performance is excellent.

  • +

IS is useful during still and video capture, Excellent Raw dynamic range, Good metering and white balance, Excellent resolution, Large, high-res viewfinder, Camera is comfortable to hold, Solid build quality, On-sensor PDAF, Plenty of Customizable buttons, Built in mic and headphone jack, Ability to...

Noisy high ISO images compared to full-frame competitors, Raw compression issues, Heavy for a mirrorless camera, Control dials are small, and too recessed, Subject tracking in continuous AF can be unreliable, No programmable auto ISO, No quick way to magnify AF point to 100% to check focus in Image...

There was a lot to like about the Sony A7 when it arrived at the top of the manufacturer’s CSC tree, and the good news is that the A7 II’s improvements are generally successful. The problematic design has been resolved thanks to the new handgrip and button configuration, totally transforming the way...

  • +

5-axis image stabilisation; New handgrip and control layout; High-res EVF

  • -

Control wheel on the rear is a touch fiddly; Loud operational noise; Battery life not great.

So with this in mind, should you go for the A7 Mark II, or wait for a Mark II version of a different model in the range? It of course depends on what it is you want. If you're into video, I'd definitely wait for an A7s Mark II or even just go for the original A7s, as the A7 Mark II has serious...

  • +

Large full frame sensor. Low noise. No lens crop., Built-in stabilisation works with any lens., Compact but comfortable and weatherproof body., High resolution EVF and tilting 3in screen., Built-in Wifi with NFC and downloadable apps.

  • -

Poor battery life, especially when using stabilisation., Stabilisation not as effective as Olympus system., Bad moire on movie footage with fine details., Screen not touch-sensitive and doesn’t fully articulate., No built-in flash.

The Zeiss Batis 2/25 is the best wide-angle prime lens available for Sony mirrorless cameras, but it's on the pricey side.

  • +

Very sharp., Wide aperture., Excellent close focus capability., Dust- and splash-resistant design., OLED depth of field scale.

  • -

Pricey., Some distortion., A little fall-off at corners., Omits optical stabilization.

The Sony Alpha A7II is an excellent camera with innumerable features that have caused quite a stir in the photography world. The best thing about the Alpha A7II is the sensor housing has been made stronger with the help of magnesium alloy.

  • +

Larger and easy-to-reach shutter button, Able to record video in XAVC S, AVCHD, or MP4 format, Richly textured coating and a deeper, more comfortable grip, Improved video features such as flat picture profile and XAVC S codec, Improved video features, thanks to XAVC S codec and flat picture profile

Battery life is not very good, Lack of touchscreen can slow you down

“For a $400 price premium over its predecessor, Sony’s A7 Mark II, with improved performance and stellar image stabilization, is worth it.”

  • +

Full-frame image quality in a compact body, Rock-steady five-axis stabilization, XAVC-S video format

  • -

Slow burst modes not ideal for action, No built-in flash

Having had the opportunity to shoot with the Sony A7 II for the past three months in different conditions, I must say that I am genuinely impressed by where Sony is heading in terms of innovation.

The Sony Alpha A7 II is a superb camera that has all the benefits of a full-frame sensor without the bulk. It has good AF, superb image stabilization and produces very high quality images in a wide range of conditions.

  • +

Size and handling, Image quality, Effective in-body stabilization system

  • -

Viewfinder colours slightly undersaturated, Position of Record button, Significant price increase over A7

Stabilisation and hardware redesign make this is big upgrade, despite sharing plenty of hardware with its predecessor.

  • +

Great OIS, Excellent dynamic range and image quality, Improved handling

  • -

Quite noisy, Fairly poor battery stamina

Big quality from small scale: that's what the Sony A7 II represents to us. Get the right lens on the front and its results are quite spectacular all things considered.

  • +

Small size yet delivers big on full-frame image quality, Excellent electronic viewfinder quality, Tilt-angle LCD, 5-axis image stabilisation on board whatever lens you're using, Affordable entry into full-frame

  • -

Poor battery life, Limited FE E-mount lenses (and many of the zooms aren't up to much), Autofocus system not comparable to an advanced DSLR, No pinpoint AF can see precision slip, No touchscreen

I once thought full frame was overkill. After trying a number of apsc sensor cameras, I found them with some deficiencies (noise, no IOS), or overpriced. I finally sprang for A7 ii after seeing it discounted. After some use, I am dazzled by video quality and photo quality.

as a professional photographer, I have found this camera perfect for my needs. While some might argue that its getting a bit long in the tooth, having been released in 2014, I say it remains a wonderful camera that performs beautifully in my world. At the current pricepoint, it cant be beat.

I'm definitely an amateur when it comes to photography but after a lot of research I decided on this camera. Takes great, clear pics and it's pretty easy to use! Also it's pretty cool that hot can upload pics directly to your phone using just WiFi. Love it!

I feels love into sony mirrorless because it can shoot faster in live view mode. previously I am using D800E live view when I am shooting because I need the sharpness of still photo, landscape and posed couple. Also I am into video as a7ii can set to 1080p 50mbps (higher bitrate for better quality).

A little wonder full frame camera that does it all with features that rock. First things first Cons: People complain about its menu complexity which is ridiculous because it is no more difficult than any other complex electronic device. Took five minutes to figure out.

1 January 2020

Pros: I love the weight of this camera as it's easy to hold in hand and does not agitate my wrist pain.Cons: no rotating LCD screen, no touchscreen, no reasonable amount of Sony manufactured budget lenses, no continuous AF, very limited low light capability
