The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM doesn't quite achieve the optical perfection of the $4,000 Zeiss Otus, but it gets close at a quarter of the price.

  • +

Incredibly sharp. Minimal distortion. 15.7-inch close focus. Available for several camera systems.

  • -

Big. Depth of field scale isn't that useful. No optical stabilization. A little pricey. Dim corners at wide apertures.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is distinctly large, heavy and expensive for its type. However this is more than made up for by its fast silent autofocus, solid build quality, and absolutely outstanding optics.

  • +

Stunning image quality - super sharp, minimal CA and practically no distortion, Impressive flare resistance, Generally attractive rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds, Fast, silent, and accurate autofocus, Excellent build quality, Full frame users looking for the sharpest possible images, even when...

  • -

Large and heavy for a 50mm F1.4 prime, Relatively expensive for its class, No weather sealing, Anyone who shoots a lot in damp or dusty conditions

If you want a truly high-end 50mm lens with autofocus, forget about Canon's own EF 50mm f1.2. For me, the best choice is Sigma's 50mm f1.4 ART lens. In my tests it delivers better contrast and crisper details across the entire frame, especially in the corners.

  • +

Very good to excellent performance across a high-resolution full-frame sensor even wide open., Fast and reliable auto-focus., Minimal light fall-off for an f1.4 lens., Solid build quality., Lower price than professional f1.4 lenses., Chance to fine-tune using optional USB dock.

  • -

Higher price than basic 50mm f1.4 lenses., Large and heavy., Not weather-sealed., Some field-curvature makes stopping down mandatory for high-quality shots of flat (or distant) subjects., Outlining sometimes makes the background Bokeh a bit nervous.

Overall, the Sigma 50mm/1.4 is a great lens. The bokeh is soft yet complex; the clarity in details is picked up without losing blur; and the vignetting on the edges is not an issue when shooting wide open.

Similar to the excellent Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art that I have numerously praised here at Photography Life in the past, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art definitely deserves the high praises. Unlike its predecessor thatfell short in a number of wayswhen I put it against other 50mm primes, the new Sigma 50mm...

Sigma has added to their 'Art' range of fast aperture lenses with this new 50mm f/1.4 lens, which will be available to fit Canon, Nikon, Sony and Sigma SLR cameras. This lens costs around £850, which seems like an awful lot for a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Back when we originally tested the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG AF lens , the first in Sigma’s new high-end Art series to be released, we weren’t just impressed, we were eager to see what would come next.

The Sigma 50mm Æ’/1.4 Art is the most exciting lens we're likely to review this year. All competing lenses from Canon and Nikon fell short when compared to the resolving power of the 50mm Art.

Sigma proved once more that they are no longer a company providing budget lenses but are playing in the top league indeed. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A (Art series) is very sharp at f/1.4 already, especially in the image center but even the corners are very decent.

Ooops ... they did it again! ;-) Sigma proved once more that they are no longer a company providing budget lenses but are playing in the top league indeed. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A (Art series) is a cream-on-the-cappuccino product - at least when used on APS-C DSLRs (well, *hint* it's not bad...

Im a Canon gal and had a hard time ordering a Sigma lens. This lens was somewhat expensive but beyond worth it. First time used it changed my Concert Photography to professional quality. The clarity in a low light situation is beyond compare.

This lens has been a sad experience for me. I have now tried two separate copies of the lens and to my great regret, I had to send both back. On each of them I spent hours calibrating the focus on the Sigma USB Dock but however hard I tried, the focus was very variable.

  • +

Build quality. Excellent sharpness if in focus! Very good colour rendition and contrast.

  • -

Would not focus reliably on Nikon D810.

Focusing speed is excellent in low light. I have used it for 2 weddings and I'm very happy with its overall sharpness even with the lens wide open at f/1.4. Focus accuracy is also excellent. Its a great convenience to have a lens cap size of 77mm similar to all my other lenses.

Ive used so many lenses and watched so many reviews before purchasing those lenses. The word tack sharp gets thrown around a lot and, being very detail oriented, I never really came across a lens and agreed it was tack sharp until the sigma 50mm 1.4 ART.

Great lens and love the clarity, but its just a heavy lens.

Ive used this lens for portraits, engagement sessions and weddings. I shoot wide open to give my photos that 3 dimensional look and have never missed focus. I feel that this lens offers just a tad bit more contrast than the Canon 1.2 and photos appear to be a little sharper.

I really do love the look of this lens, but I am disappointed that it broke after only a year. I think it can be fixed, but Ive never had that issue with any of my canon lenses that I have had for years. Makes me want to not purchase sigma in the future.
