The Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art is without a doubt a very high quality standard lens with autofocus for Canon, Nikon, Leica L-mount or Sony full-frame cameras. You’d expect it to out-perform the cheaper Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM and Nikkor 50mm f1.4G lenses considering it’s roughly twice the price, but the big...

  • +

Very good to excellent performance across a high-resolution full-frame sensor even wide open., Fast and reliable auto-focus., Minimal light fall-off for an f1.4 lens., Solid build quality., Lower price than professional f1.4 lenses., Chance to fine-tune using optional USB dock.

  • -

Higher price than basic 50mm f1.4 lenses., Large and heavy., Not weather-sealed., Some field-curvature makes stopping down mandatory for high-quality shots of flat (or distant) subjects., Outlining sometimes makes the background Bokeh a bit nervous.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is distinctly large, heavy and expensive for its type. However this is more than made up for by its fast silent autofocus, solid build quality, and absolutely outstanding optics.

Stunning image quality - super sharp, minimal CA and practically no distortion, Impressive flare resistance, Generally attractive rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds, Fast, silent, and accurate autofocus, Excellent build quality, Full frame users looking for the sharpest possible images, even when...

Large and heavy for a 50mm F1.4 prime, Relatively expensive for its class, No weather sealing, Anyone who shoots a lot in damp or dusty conditions

It seems that several manufacturers decided that the most natural focal length (which some call the "most boring one" instead) could need a little more excitement. This has lead to a bunch of new products in this area, but as before, most of them were quite expensive, like for example the new Nikkor...

There have not been many Sigma lens announcements that generated the anticipation that the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens announcement generated. The 50 Art Lens was announced not long after the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 Distagon T* ZE Lens arrived, delivering a not-before-seen high level of...

Similar to the excellent Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art that I have numerously praised here at Photography Life in the past, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art definitely deserves the high praises. Unlike its predecessor thatfell short in a number of wayswhen I put it against other 50mm primes, the new Sigma 50mm...

The Sigma 50mm ƒ/1.4 Art is the most exciting lens we're likely to review this year. All competing lenses from Canon and Nikon fell short when compared to the resolving power of the 50mm Art. Compared to the mighty Zeiss 55mm ƒ/1.4 Otus, the Sigma holds its own, displaying nearly identical results!

Sigma has added to their 'Art' range of fast aperture lenses with this new 50mm f/1.4 lens, which will be available to fit Canon, Nikon, Sony and Sigma SLR cameras. This lens costs around £850, which seems like an awful lot for a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Weird things are happening in the photo industry at the moment ... a war is going on. A war about providing the very best 50mm lens around. It all started a few years back when some of the market players rediscovered the "nifty fifties" again.

LOVE this thing. It feels sturdy in the hand, and focuses as fast as any sony lenses I own. Also works well on my a6500. Sigma has stepped things up with these FE Sony lenses, offering a consistent quality in f1.4 across the prime range. Looking forward to seeing some zooms in the future I hope...

This is one sharp and contrasty lens! Even wide open the central portion of the image is totally usable. Stop the lens down to f/2 and most of the frame is super sharp. From f/2.8 it's tack sharp from corner to corner. Colour and contrast are excellent too.

I bought this lens to replace my Canon 50 1.4, and decided on the Sigma over the Canon 1.2L. The Canon 1.2 is much more expensive, MUCH slower to focus, and, IMO, less sharp. I’m using it on an EOS R and a 5D mkiii and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the build quality, image quality, af speed.

This lens is near the pinnacle of the 50mm lenses for Sony E-mount. The Zeiss 50/1.4 reigns supreme but this lens is a far better value. The image quality is top notch. The fall off and bokeh can only be described as molten clarified butter. It's an utterly fantastic portrait lens.

I could use this lens for literally everything I do. I usually use it for the majority of the time on my portrait sessions and weddings. It is so amazing and the images are so sharp and beautiful!! I love the low aperture and that I'm still able to nail the focus!

Im glad that Sigma has started to support sony with there lens lineup. Definitely a lot faster than using an adapter but definitely not as fast as a native Sony lens. Now to some that might not matter as much as it all depends on your style.

The lens is beautiful, the quality is excellent, but my wrists can't take the strain for long periods of time. The lens is nearly 2 pounds, and when it's attached to my Nikon D5600, which is relatively lightweight, it creates an uncomfortable shift in the balance that strains my wrists.

This lens has actually made me feel like I'm going insane at times. The focus was perfect for months when it was new, then it was off enough that I bought the dock. Once calibrated, it worked perfectly again, and then a few months later it was inaccurate again.

I'll start with the transparency that is telling you that I've owned this lens now for one week. It's not a significant amount of time to fully review any lens, but I always come back to update on my lens reviews after a few months, so this is just my initial thoughts.

This photo was shot at f/2.2 and I was pleased. I gave the lens 4 stars instead of 5 because I had to calibrate it right out of the box because the lens was front focusing. This was a bit frustrating. I'm glad the dock came with the lens as this made calibration much easier.
