Overall, there is much to recommend this lens but it isn't in the same league as the stunning full-frame 35mm f/1.4 tested previously. Although the 30mm f/1.4 is worthy of serious consideration, potential purchasers must bear in mind that it possesses weaknesses as well as strengths.

  • +

F/1.4 maximum aperture; Excellent MTF results; Full-time MF option; Near-silent AF; Metal mounting flange

  • -

Significant barrel distortion; Some colour fringing; No image stabilisation

The Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM is a fast normal angle lens for APS-C cameras, but suffers from a lack of sharpness and a good amount of barrel distortion.

  • +

Fast aperture. Available for many camera systems.

  • -

    Expensive. Soft images. Noticeable distortion.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM is currently the only wide angle prime that was specifically designed for APS-C sensors and as such it has no direct competition. Nevertheless, users should carefully review the benefits this lens provides versus the more traditional FF type wide angles.

A fast aperture lens always garners attention and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Lens is no exception. Photographers wasted little time in making this lens one of their favorites.

Sigma rebuilt it... they had the technology.

This is a ‘standard’ lens for a cropped digital SLR. 25 years ago, all SLR’s came with a ‘standard’ lens and everybody learned how to use one. Those lenses, at 50mm, are still about but don’t have the versatility that they had on a 35mm film camera.

Originally published October 2005. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The first high-speed "normal" lens for digital SLRs with APS-sized sensors, this 30mm f/1.4 is Sigma's first nontele lens to incorporate elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass.

The Sigma AF 30mm f/1.4 EX DC is a lens with a mission - to achieve the highest center resolution there is without caring too much about the rest. The border performance of the Sigma is soso at f/1.4 and only good beyond, the vignetting is high at large apertures and neither CAs nor distortions are...

It seems the primary design priority for the Sigma AF 30mm f/1.4 EX DC was to achieve the highest possible center resolution without caring too much about the rest. The border performance of the lens is just so-so at f/1.4 and only good when stopped down.

Although not offering spectacular performance, Sigma's 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM produces sharp enough images and has few enough inherent faults to suit most photographers. Compared with other prime lenses it is very good value for its price and its resolution at middle apertures is a match for many of...

Last year I made the switch to full frame and parked Sigma's 50mm F1.4 Art lens on my 5Diii. I thought full frame was the most amazing thing, and I could never go back. Then I started doing a little bit of video work, so I dusted off my SL1 to use as "camera 2.

Needed a lens for low lighting conditions. Can't get much faster than f/1.4 ! Sigma makes pretty good third party lenses . I had several with my old Minolta film cameras back in the day and they worked great. This is my first Sigma for a DSLR. Took it out for a test run yesterday.

I got this lens because I wanted a fast prime with shorter focal length than the ordinary 35 mm. On the paper this lens looks ideal with 30 mm focal lenght and a fast f/1.4 apperture. In reality however, it is a different matter.

  • +

Large aperture, ideal focal lengh for a normal prime on DX, affordable

  • -

    Sharpnes (or the lack thereof)

This is the lens I use most. It's a fast wide/mid lens. If I take only one lens with me, it's this lens. The wide aperture is really helpful for shooting sports at night and shows.

  • +

    - solid construction, - very wide aperture, - sharp

  • -

    None in my case.

I bought this lens for Sony a77ii thought that it is autofocus but it's not.. not really happy for it

Perfect for the price and it's capabilities!

23 April 2017

AWFUL for novice photographers. Auto focus is terrible. My images are consistently blurry.

6 April 2017

April 17, 2017 Update I'm very pleased with this lens. Although I did not receive the one pictured which was also indicated to be an HSM model. The focus is noisy if I were to use it for video.

1 March 2017

The autofocus is quite slow and inconsistent. Also the image isn't as sharp as it could be but the autofocus is really what killed me. I don't have time in field to wonder and check if the autofocus worked as it should have. I.e. eyes out of focus, that kills me so.
