When used with full frame cameras & Sigma's 1.4x or 2x optional Tele Converters it becomes a 420mm F4 manual focus lens or a 600mm F5.6 manual focus lens respectively. For the professional or advanced amateur looking for such a lens at a value price there is no other choice than the Sigma 300mm...
I have had this lens for many years. I have used almost every lens in this focal length and this is the one I go to. I have sold my long Canon lenses because I could not see the extra expense when the Sigma does everything I ask of it.
Had to replace my 300 2.8 Nikon. The cost of a new Nikon was just a tad out of the question, at the time. I had used a 300 2.8 AF Sigma once before (on loan) and I was impressed with the reults. So I took a punt, while in London and purchased this lens, to be used mainly for soccer and baseball.

This lens is hitched to a Nikon D2X. The lens is light, but still needs a monpod. There was no evidence of it wanting to "hunt" in low light and it's auto focus was up to my expectations. I was really satisfied with the results, it produced in combination with the D2X. Yes.

It comes with a drop in filter (Polariser), but there appears to be no other filters to fiit (you know..red, yellow etc). Maybe Sigma needs to work on this. I look after my gear, so I don't anticipate a problem with this lens. As I said before, only time will tell.
I purchased this lens to use on my Nikon D800. It is fabulous and has done well for me. It has one drawback, and that is the weight. I fly a lot in small Cessna's around parks in Africa with safari clients and weight is becoming more and more of an issue with charter airline companies.
I bought this lens about 8 years ago and use it mainly for nature and wildlife. It's sharp and stays sharp even with the 1.4 Sigma teleconverter. It looses a little bit with the 2.0 Sigma teleconverter but if you're able to shoot at f8 it's pretty darn sharp.
I have used the lens for three soccer matches since I got it and I am so far pleased with the image quality. I like the weight and auto focus tracking.
I wanted a telephoto lens with an f/2.8 capability and planned to extend the range with teleconverters mostly for nature/wildlife photography. I read reviews and watched YouTube videos (not many available due to the newness of this product) and it sounded great.
I used this lens on a wildlife trip to India. It was lighter than the similar Nikon lens and autofocused consistently with the Sigma 2x tele-converter attached (which is not true with my Nikon lens/2X teleconverter). I was very unhappy with the lack of sharpness, though.
I have been using it for nature shots. Nice clear, sharp photos. Very well made, sturdy lens. Because of the large aperture and quality it is heavy. As a 64 year old female I am still able to use it without a tripod, so it is manageable. Ouse on my Nikon D300.
I shoot from motorsports to high school football and I knew that I was going to have to eventually invest in a 300mm 2.8 to be able to take on more projects but I did not want to go broke making a lens purchase.
I photograph wildlife primarly. The 2.8 F stops really has impproved the clarity of my photos and ability to shoot in liwer light circumstances.
